Some pretty impressive stuff going on in the UK.
A 4,000 bed hospital has been set up in London in 10 days and will start taking patients on Thursday.
Ineos, (a very big chemical company) is building 2 factories to make a million bottles of sanitiser a month and give them to the NHS for free within 10 days
Whatever happens, it won't be for lack of effort.
-
@Victor-Meldrew totally agree actually, been quite blown away by it all myself. Really has been all hands to deck, even if percieved a little delayed. Gives a little hope.
-
@R-L
There's shedloads of stuff going on behind the scene and it's clear there been a huge, coordinated effort to get NHS capacity as high as possible.
A doctor in Carmarthenshire realised a simple ventilator would be really effective and reduce the need for ICU ventilators. A local engineering/plastics moulding company produced a prototype in 3 days, sorted out some technical problems with help from a F1 team (Williams, I think) and had it approved today. Now producing 100 a week.
Just hope it all comes together and we can reduce the death rate.
-
man Italy is just rampant!
over 5,000 more cases, thier total deaths now over double that of China, in fact thier deaths getting close to being as much as those recovered!!
Spain surging toward overtaking China for deaths too...scary stuff

Must say I find some of the UK media grating.
Journo asks Health Minister what to do if work is not 'essential', but can't be done at home, and boss is insisting on attendance, WHEREAS we can't have meetings of more than 2 in public? Answer: If you can keep safe spacing, GO TO WORK! Disatisfied mumblings from reporter.
FFS people ought to be grateful they have a job.
What about crowding on tube? Are workers selfishly avoiding guidance by insisting on going to work despite crowded tube? Answer: TFL should be aiming to run full service. Not the workers' faults! -
@Victor-Meldrew UK has been stockpiling Oxygen for months. Once COVID-19 hit Italy in a big way they realised they would need lots and lots and lota of ventilators. Hopefully they will arrive in time.
The other problem is a lack of Personal Protective Equipment. Nurses in my big London hospital ICU had to use bin bags last week.

At least one craft brewery here in NZ are going into production of hand sanitiser. Hopefully they don’t mix up the batches...
Our clinic was mixing up their own. Its quite simple, for every 100ml you make it needs to comprise of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% moisturizer for example a clear aloe vera gel

Much has been atrocious. Sky & BBC have been good.
Like the way Hancock slaps down silly questions. The Green MP in parliament starting moaning that the advice to self-isolate was muddled and then started grandstanding - unlike the other MP's asking sensible, constructive questions.
His response was acid. "If she doesn't understand, I'll send her an advice poster"
-
UK manufacturing, I think, is less consumer and more hi-tech, high-value. Names people have never heard of, like Meggitt, are seriously big global players.
Meggit provide much of the emergency oxygen systems in passenger aircraft. Useful in today's crisis

From Sam Stein’s twitter feed. Hope he’s right.
“Italy’s lockdown does seem to finally be working.
“New cases today 4,789 for a total of 63,927 — down about 1,000 from yesterday
“New deaths today 601 for a total of 6,077 — down about 50 from yesterday
“Horrible numbers still. But big picture: some rays of optimism“
Well, that was optimism for a day. It’s up again.
Italy coronavirus deaths rise by 743 in a day, lifting total death toll to 6,820
I read that the rate of infection had slowed though? That has to be encouraging as a leading indicator.
Edit: @taniwharugby has posted 5k more cases. Not so good ☹️

Went up today. Too early to say if it's an outlier and the trend is still up.
If it does continue upward, it might mean lock-down may not be effective. Terrifying thought

State and Federal governments are making this up as they go along. Terrified of their own incompetence after a cruise ship of all things docked and the sick wandered off into the populace.
I disagree with this. Easily the toughest challenge for any Government in modern memory and I think both State and Federal Governments are doing OK.
There are optical things I think they aren't quite nailing - Morrison's communication of the restrictions, or the fact that it happens at 9:20pm when a lot of the nation have switched off for the day.
But they are clearly taking the advice of experts, and I think the plan is quite clear as well. They are staging the shutdowns based on risk but with a view to keeping businesses open and operating as long as possible to preserve jobs.
Despite the spread our mortality rate is still very low which means we are protecting our vulnerable as best we can.
The cynicism from some online is saddening at times. I'm not a 'rally round the troops' kind of guy but some people want to believe the worst of every politician, as if Morrison and co aren't taking the advice of the medicos at every stage and there's some magic solution to this problem that they are all just too dumb to notice.

I don't know what's happening there now but as recently as last week it appeared many were still not observing the lockdown. It's only effective if you stay away from people.....

BBC reports that “whilst the number of deaths has risen the rate of increase in infections has slowed”.
However, one swallow does not make a summer.

When the kids were babies we used to say that one or two days was not a sign of a pattern and change in behaviour. Give me 4 or 5 days of improvement minimum

I wonder if they thought a lockdown 2 weeks ago would have been impossible to put in place effectively and impossible to police so focused on protecting 1.5m vulnerable people and increasing NHS capacity. They always said timing was critical.
We now have a full lock-down, done in a controlled, phased manner (schools first, NHS staff freed up), supported by the public and massive social pressure to observe the lock-down, making it really effective.
Just hope so, I really do.

Was that today? Figures came out at around 1600.
Really, really hope you're right and I'm wrong
