$2 million for 21 years

Mr Pora was convicted in 1994 of the 1992 rape and murder of Susan Burdett, who was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat in her South Auckland home.

New evidence presented to the Privy Council showed Mr Pora suffered from foetal alcohol syndrome that made his confession, which was key to his original conviction, unsafe.

Not sure I agree with the amount of compensation merely because the conviction is determined to be unsafe. This isn't a case of determining by DNA evidence that they definitely had the wrong person, or did TVNZ neglect to mention that?

  • I thought evidence had pretty much concluded Malcolm Rewa did it?

  • I may be reading tooany newspapets/websites ...

  • And fuck $2mil for 21 years. He should get $21m+

  • And fuck $2mil for 21 years. He should get $21m+
I hope the poor bugger has had something put in place so he doesn't blow the coin wolf of wall st style in a year or so. That's exactly what I would do if I'd been in prison for 21 years for a crime I didn't commit.

  • And fuck $2mil for 21 years. He should get $21m+

Agreed. 21 years in prison! That whole case was a giant clusterfuck (multiple changing of 'confession', no DNA or physical evidence to support), and that it has taken this long to right the terrible wrong is appalling. I just hope he has some really robust support around him (obviously not certain fuckwit relatives) and gets given time to readjust without outside pressures.

Edit: this article gives a good overview.

  • The part of his life he has missed can never have a number put on it....

  • The part of his life he has missed can never have a number put on it....

Yep. Not just the financial considerations, but all the interpersonal stuff too. He is a father and a grandfather, what price can you put on missing out on all that?

  • I agree with all the above sentiments. I have so much sympathy for this guy. I wouldn't give him 2 million or even 21 million, I would give him 100k a year for the rest of his life, inflation adjusted.Mainly as I dont think he has the skills or mental capacity to handle 2 million dollars in a lump sum, NZ owe him a comfortable life from now on.

I think the NZ public has a lot of sympathy for him.

David Bain on the other hand.. not so much.

  • David Bain can fuck off but BSG has a point , that money would need to be managed. One of the reasons he was inside was his limited mental capacity .

  • What's the bet that all the "cuzzies" come out of the woodwork just to check on how he is then ask to borrow 20k.....

Nice to hear him say he might use it to visit some "cool places" wherever that may be.

David Bain and Joe Karem have been in our faces every five minutes, it's grown fucken tiresome.

One fat fluffybunny that can rot in there for the rest of his life is Mark Lundy, it appalls me that he got ANOTHER trial and the verdict was exactly the same ?!?!?

  • I'm sure I read he got bugger all visitors in prison , if that's true I hope he remembers that when leeches come to him with their hands out.

  • I'm sure I read he got bugger all visitors in prison , if that's true I hope he remembers that when leeches come to him with their hands out.

Well yeah but that's my point, the old "hey bro, was meaning to come and visit you for the last 20 odd years, hey my cars fucked, rent is behind and the missus and I could do with a holiday to the Gold Coast, help me out bro?"

  • Well yeah but that's my point, the old "hey bro, was meaning to come and visit you for the last 20 odd years, hey my cars fucked, rent is behind and the missus and I could do with a holiday to the Gold Coast, help me out bro?"

Since he's already done a life sentence he should get a get out of jail free card for one murder and if I was him the first parasite with his hand out would get it to send a message to the rest.

Ha, that opens up so many cans of worms doesn't it ? maybe ten separate GBH charges instead ?

  • Ha, that opens up so many cans of worms doesn't it ? maybe ten separate GBH charges instead ?

Good call, harsh but fair .

  • as BSG alludes too, most seem to have a lot of sympathy for him...there is the odd comment saying $2mill is fair given he would never have earned $100k a year, but that doesn't take into account all the intangibles that were taken from him as well.

Are a fair few on social media who think he should be just paid a hefty salary as well as being mindful of those who will try to bleed him dry!

Yeah, caucasians or European people would NEVER do that eh, just bludging Maoris

  • Yeah, caucasians or European people would NEVER do that eh, just bludging Maoris
Huh? Is "bro" reserved only for Maori now?

  • Fuck. I use cuzzy all the time at rugby. Because there are a lot of cuzzies.

  • Yeah, caucasians or European people would NEVER do that eh, just bludging Maoris

Sorry I'll re word it so you understand it "Tough lag old chap ? I say couldn't help me out, I'm in one jam of a pickle don't want to impose but wondering if you'd be so kind as to help finance me ? got into a spot of bother recently...."

My turn to be up for a stoush today ya bloody rayscalist thingee.

You know you were angling for a certain persuasion and ya mongrel mates who backed you up with the "what me sir?, we call 50 year old wealthy caucasians cuzzy and bro all the time, so we do"

You should be ashamed of ya stereotypes ya fat internet virgin nerds!!

  • That's just weird. I call my missus bro. She's a she, and English. Shock huh

  • That's just weird. I call my missus bro. She's a she, and English. Shock huh

Is this you admiting you are from Canterbury?

  • That's just weird. I call my missus bro. She's a she, and English. Shock huh

I call mine far worse but she's Maori and often doesn't hear cos it's noisy in the kitchen when she's cooking my eggs.

  • That's just weird. I call my missus bro. She's a she, and English. Shock huh

Well I'm better, I call mine black bitch

should I have included smileys in my attempted stoush with MN5?

  • Is this you admiting you are from Canterbury?
    How dare thee. Eastbourne, bitch.

  • How dare thee. Eastbourne, bitch.

Gotta confess I do love the 'bourne, it's like you're not even in the Hutt anymore.

    You're welcome.

  • You're welcome.

Panhead APA at the clubrooms. Colour me impressed.

  • Panhead APA at the clubrooms. Colour me impressed.
I'll colour you the right colour to enter the borough.

  • I thought evidence had pretty much concluded Malcolm Rewa did it?

That's what I can't understand - that Rewa had two trials and a jury couldn't come to a satisfactory conclusion, and that Pora had his conviction set aside.

And fuck $2mil for 21 years. He should get $21m+

    If he's innocent, I agree.

  • I'll colour you the right colour to enter the borough.

They were singing songs about you in the clubrooms, brought tears to my eyes

Not only should he be compensated for such an appalling miscarriage, what prospect does he have to earn a wage he can save and retire on in his remaining years?

    So he's only 40 now ? I thought he'd be close to 50.

  • Was 17 when put away...I don't expect his career prospects would be high anyway now, which makes a salary option far better for him.
Apparently Arthur Alan Thomas was compensated for half the time and in today's money the equivalent of $4mill.

  • Gotta confess I do love the 'bourne, it's like you're not even in the Hutt anymore.

    It's lower hutts Elysium

  • I've only got a limited amount of sympathy for Teina Pora who was, somewhat, the architect of his own demise. Scamming a police reward - not a bright idea!

Arthur Allan Thomas was pretty much guilty only of taking Jeanette Crewe on a date many years previously and being too helpful to some crooked police.

Oh my god. Seriously? He was 17 years old, dirt poor, with the mental age of someone much younger due to Alcohol Fetal Syndrome. He had a toddler daughter who he was attempting to do the right thing by. Teenagers are pretty damn clueless to start with, but this guy had no chance.

The police should have told him to get on his bike and piss off cos he was wasting their time. Instead they stole 21 years of his life with a false conviction based on NO evidence.

It wasn't the police who convicted him.
