Canterbury vs Taranaki (Ranfurly Shield)

Awesome game. Glad to see the shield move around. Mmac was pretty good, especially his goal kicking. As otgers said Ngatai was good when he came on. I really hope we can see him reach his potential and that the head knocks don't finish his career early. He is the sort of guy that could really get the AB backline going.
Will be interesting to watch TTT next year in super rugby. Could be in with a shot of taking the third AB 9 spot.

Canterbury coached by Delaney reminds me of the Crusaders coached by Blackadder. All the talent without the performance.
Glad Delaney is fucking off to the highlanders... we've been uninspiring this year against the better teams
giving up 55 points in a shield challenge is disgraceful. No ficking pride in the jersey.
Ngatai looked fat, but was awesome. Why doesn't tamanivulu get a chance for the abs?
We've missed Luke Whitelock heaps more than I expected.

Obviously, Robbertson not being the coach anymore makes a big different but that's harsh. Canterbury have only lost two games - both against good sides - and are still a favourite for the Premiership title, albeit not the only one anymore. Their halves are still the best in the competition and the Cantabs are also missing several crucial players (compared to last year) in Luke Whitelock (injured), Scott Barrett and - especially - Matt Todd in the forwards, and Jack Goodhue and Jordie Barrett in the backs. Bird going down early in this game didn't help either (IMO a bigger factor than Ngatai coming on for Taranaki, which happened only a few minutes later).
But it's good for the competition to see other teams step up and getting a good shot to toppling the Cantabs over.

By the way, different from what the Mitre 10 cup website says, Taranaki - on equal points with Canterbury - now top the table, as the tiebreaking rules (if they haven't changed from last year) say that the "winner of the round robin match between the two sides has the higher position". Taranaki also have played only 8 games, against Canterbury 9. In theory, all Prem teams except Waikato still have a chance to take that last semi-final spot (Naki, Canterbury & Harbour have already secured theirs), although it will be hard in practice for Counties and Auckland.
Same situation in the Ch'ship, with only the Shield Snorters and Southland certain to miss out on the semis, and only Wellington certain of a semi-final spot. It's more exciting than ever ... if you're not a die hard Waikato, Shield Snorters or Southland supporter.

What has happened to the rugby ball this year in particular to get the reverse swing that sees goal kick clearly swinging away from the posts an missing somehow reverse swing back against the flight of the ball and pass between the uprights? It happens too often to be called a fluke or "allowing for the wind" in both rugby and league. That last conversion be Richie Mo'ounga was just the latest of these reverse swigging efforts.
That's due to a combination of ball, wind direction and kicking style. Some kickers get a golf ball like spin going with the side of foot style kick. The grip dots on the ball do the rest.
Not all kickers get this happening especially toe hackers like me -

This was supposed to be a super clash between arguably the two strongest teams in the competition. I only see one strong team tonight. Come on Naki! That Shield must circulate!
Seriously was thinking the same thing... 24 point lead ... you wouldn't have thunk it

If Taranaki wins the Shield tonight, they already have a challenge on Wednesday. From Manawatu. Whoever wins that game, keeps the Shield until next season.
Go go Manawatu!
(People domiciled in 1970s/80s Manawatu will get that reference)

He's had a chance before, he just didn't stand out enough for continued selection. He runs a bit hot and cold - he's been running pretty hot this year though.

Oi! The All Blacks can keep their grubby hands off our players thank-you very much. Bad enough they had a crack at Riccitelli earlier in the year.
It's hard enough putting dynasty together being outside of the big 4 without the AB's also poaching all our talent.

Yeah, but Tamanivalu got his chance only as a midfielder. I'd like to see him get a run in the 14 jersey. Obviously, only if Dagg isn't playing.
