I'm astonished he continues to get work even if it appears the most difficult aspect of professional coaching is getting that first head coach appointment.

Venter, the Boks backline coach, who is also the head coach of the Cheetahs, was asked by Rassie to choose one or the other, he ended up choosing the Cheetahs gig.

That's the type of commitment the Boks need to get rid of - Good start.

Rassie being picked up was a good choice from the Old Boy's Club, and solves one of the 3 main problems of Springbok rugby.

I apologise, I meant Franco Smith, not Venter. Venter is the Part time Bok defensive consultant, he's also employed by Italy, and sat in the Italy box when playing SA for the past 2 years as defensive consultant?

He's certainly an "unusual character" - I read his book and can't recall all the details that led to that conclusion, but it was extremely firm by the end.

Waning? That was a very Hammetteur like performance, the closest they've come to that since Boyd took over, that will see them not make the semis.

Re: Mitchell, we know the wheels will fall of soon, he's good for nearly 12 months before he loses the dressing room.

So the worst kept secret is confirmed with the announcement of Rassie Erasmus being appointed as Bok coach. Good appointment, but will ultimately suffer from the same flaws of Bok Rugby as his predecessors before him.

Rassie Erasmus has been confirmed as the new Springbok coach who will lead the team through to the 2023 World Cup.

SA Rugby made the official announcement on Thursday. Erasmus takes over the leadership reins from Allister Coetzee to become the 14th Bok coach since 1992.

In a statement, SA Rugby said Erasmus will 'spearhead a streamlined but experienced Springbok management team until the end of the 2023 World Cup and will combine his Springbok coaching duties with his current role as director of rugby at SA Rugby'.

Erasmus' all-new coaching team will be made up of defence guru Jacques Nienaber, scrum expert Pieter de Villiers and backs coach Mzwandile Stick.

According to SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux, the changes to the Springbok management team are the result of a very thorough review process of the 2017 season.

'The Springbok team is our flagship brand and the on-field performances have a direct impact on the business of SA Rugby.

'Following a very detailed review process of the 2017 season, I believe that we have managed to assemble a strong and experienced Springbok coaching and management staff. We are looking forward to seeing improved performances this season.'

Erasmus, who re-joined SA Rugby at the end of 2017 following a brief but successful stint at Munster, described his new appointment as a tremendous honour.

'It is a huge task to coach the Springboks and I am very privileged. I really believe we have the players and the rugby IP [intellectual property] to turn things around and to mount a serious challenge at next year’s World Cup.

'We have 18 Tests and just under 600 days until Japan 2019 and although a lot of planning has already gone into our World Cup preparation, it is very important that we prepare thoroughly for the matches against Wales and England in June.'

Meanwhile, two other experienced former staff members return to the new-look Springbok management set-up, Charles Wessels (head of operations) and Rene Naylor (physiotherapist), while Aled Walters will join the management team as head of athletic performance.

Worst kept secret is right. Even the leak about de Villiers as scrum coach proved correct. Good on them, but what a laugh playing kabuki theatre trying to keep this under wraps for months. At least they never directly denied it.

Yeah, this is the first time that I have heard of it being done, and it does seem like a good idea. Spending around a month with each franchise can only strengthen the understanding between players and coaches.

It doesn't really matter now. If the ANC go for their land grab the Boks are over.

Every decent player will get an overseas contract the minute they can.

That the Boks are no longer the pinnacle just makes it more likely.
