@mn5 Just following the swoley bible bro!
And didn't I catch you referencing 'dank memes' in another thread??! Although that's more current than wanky
-
@MN5 I missed that. Perfect meme for the last couple of workouts though!
Only had time for a quick workout last night. Bubs has just started childcare with mum going back to work. So that's gonna mess with our routines for a week or so - if I can get 2 workouts in during the week I reckon I'm winning. That's not to mention the bloody injury cramping my style too!
Going booze free(ish) from Feb. Worked really well for me last year and def have 7-10kg I'd like to shed.
We've repeated variations of our chest workout. But adding in some back and avoiding anything that'll trigger my sjw hernia
We upped the weight on bench last night after a couple of sessions hovering around 60kg (and many, many, reps!). Still getting used to having my feet up on the bench, but it means zero issues or niggles. With heavier weight off the menu it's all about volume at the moment. My mate has a new bench set up (wider grip) so he's kind of starting again too.
I ended up doing 5 by 12 at 80kg last night. That felt really manageable, even without any leg drive. Then we did some one arm machine rows, then hit preacher curls to finish.

Slow couple of weeks, with a trip away and bubs has started childcare. So that's a whole new routine to fit training around. Going to chase up ACC next week - no further news aside from advising they need to make a call by the 1st April at the latest. FFS that is ages away!
Chest, back and arms. All lightweight and rep heavy. Nothing felt sore and no twinges during any lifts. Going to see what sort of leg stretching/mobility I can get away with next week. I know any groin targeted stuff will likely be iffy, but should still be able to roll out and hopefully maintain flexibility.
Fark it felt good to shift some weights though. A reminder of how important gym/exercise is for quality of life. Plus training gave me somewhat of a buffer with kai and booze. Back on my no beersies approach now, so that'll see me shed 5-7kg in the next couple of months - faster if I can get to the gym more... or eat better... hmmm will let you know how I get on
-
Light bench, waiters, standing KB press, and some preacher curls. Still had DOMs from last week ha ha - we did some rolling out. Plus a bit of mobility work too. Getting a good sense of what I can manage at the moment.
Nothing so far has caused any issues. Funnily enough walking uphill aggravates it the most out of day-to-day activity. Did I mention I live in Wellington
-
oops - have been slack on updates! Still managing the F'ing hernia, it doesn't seem to be any worse but I'm just increasingly aware of how it limits activity. ACC deadline for a decision was early April, but I'm going to be pushing for a call before then. Gets a bit ridic when you've been waiting for 5 months!!
Have managed about 2 gym sessions a week over the last wee while. Rotating through chest, back, and arms. All light weight and high rep. Found out that nearly any cable options aren't the best. Irony is I've spent the last two years learning how to recruit my core for lifting, now I have to dial that back and try and isolate!
Good news is I think my arms are getting bigger! it's pretty much all I've been doing lol. Should help out when I can get back into normal training.... one day!

@paekakboyz ps I said 'arms' at least twice... add in a mention of 'guns' and @MN5 is sure to appear

I'm doing lots of rope/firemans pole climbing without using legs. Great for #guns #pump #functionalstrength

@mn5 you aren't keeping your missus in a tower by any chance are ya??!
Na she's nipping at my heels as I climb away from her.

@mn5 ooooh a biter aye! as long as she's gentle and you have a safety word!!
Good to hear the training is going well. Rope work is mean as!
Damn straight homes. Between that, tyre flipping, hitting the bag and, ahem, Pilates I'm loving it!

Sooooo ACC have declined the claim. Seems their position is that the vast majority of hernias are over-time issues, rather than being down to a traumatic event. Absolutely gutted, but I'll be talking to my GP about how I might appeal the decision.
Just because the majority occur in that manner doesn't mean ALL of them happen that way. I did a quick call around to get costs for private care - 11-15k is the approximate price range!! Good to know if we end up looking at legal representation for the ACC appeal. Did get a steer that appeals for hernia related claims have been successful.
But it does feel like they've waited nearly 5 months to tell me something they could have just said up front! On the whole ACC is pretty good (unless you are self-employed in my experience), but there are certainly gaps!!
-
-
Thanks heaps JK!! I think going public is an option but I imagine the wait-list will be pretty long, not to mention the chance of getting bumped for urgent (quite rightly) surgeries.
Will see what my GP suggests about appealing, but if there is a option for private surgery for less than 5k I think I'd just pursue that to get it done. 2 more years without being able to lift properly is no life at all ha ha
-
Hold the phone lads! Saw my GP last week and he said don't pursue private options. He put me on the public waitlist and was supportive of appealing the ACC decision. But low and behold I get a call from the Hospital today - consult on Monday to hopefully get something scheduled, or get officially in the queue. Keen to find out if they'll need to cut me right open or do it via laparoscopic surgery. Hopefully the latter, and no fucking mesh for me.
Still no promises of when it'll happen, but to get some swift action has definitely got me feeling more chipper.
Tempted to still appeal via ACC, but might keep that powder dry
-
Hope you get some kind of result soon mate. Really sucks that you have to go through the process and be concerned about costs etc.
How is it just on a daily basis? Is it painful and something you always notice? This happening to a serious lifter like you is like chopping the paw off a lion.
But your optimism and cheerful attitude are awesome mate. Could learn a thing or two from you.
-
@Rancid-Schnitzel I do get a bit of mild pain, but only when standing up or bending over to pick things up. But being an office monkey means I do quite a bit of the former. Have been very careful with any gym stuff to make sure it doesn't aggravate things - that's worked well so far.
But the hardest bit has been having to be careful when playing with bubs. She loves to get thrown around and play-fight, and that is heaps of fun. Over the weekend I definitely did too much when we went to the beach. But what's the point of having a dad that lifts if he can't throw you around!!
Yeah RS, spot on analogy. Desperately keen to get back to legs and squatting again. Certainly have had ups and downs but on the whole I've tried to stay as upbeat as possible. That is the good thing about bubs, she is a happy little thing so that always perks me up.
Plus I just put on an old-ish workshirt today and my arms can barely fit. Yeah buddy, still sneaking some gains in despite the situation.

You know how they say life can be stranger than fiction...
Had my hospital appointment on Monday. I was hoping to hear what the time line for an op would be, and if it'd be a slice me open or high tech surgery. But fuck me if the doc, and his boss, established that I don't actually have a hernia! what in the actual fuck!
The Senior doc reckons the most likely cause is inflammation of muscle/tendon that tracks across part of the pelvic bone - apparently it's a stone cold bitch to diagnose, and both docs talked about ultrasound interpretation as an art rather than a science. They did all sorts of extra poking and prodding (was a bit cold in the ol room!) and couldn't locate any bump etc that would definitely show it was a hernia. Where the pain was meant it couldn't be a hernia - wish I'd known that a few fucking months ago!
So in a roundabout way ACC declining my claim means I dodged surgery that (apparently) I don't need. They've got me on a course of steroids to try and reduce the inflammation. Not anabolic ones unfortunately so I'm still technically natty lol. See them again in 6 weeks to see how things are going. I think physio is also an option too - ha ha I'm back ACC - how you like me now fuckers!
Stoked that it's not a hernia, and avoiding surgery is really good. But it does feel like starting again in terms of getting treatment underway. Buuuuut... I'm pretty sure I can get back to squatting!! it doesn't seem to aggravate my injury, and when I thought it was a hernia I was dialling back everything. So stoked... but will take it easy until I see how things are shaping up.
I definitely can't bench with legs down - but I am getting used to having my legs on the bench. Miss that extra power and stability though.
So how about that aye - caught between feeling filthy, stoked, and a bit worried that they don't know exactly what is wrong. Will hopefully know more in 6 weeks... stay tuned!!
ps have missed adding about 3-4 chest/back/arms workouts in the last 3 weeks. Caught the spew bug over the weekend and just as I recovered I picked up a cold from bubs. Fark me - life just doesn't quit aye!
