So much for the no.1 seed Virginia making a run at the NCAA title. I watched a little bit of their game yesterday versus University of Maryland, Baltimore County and they made history for all the wrong reasons. A 74-54 loss means UVA have become the first no.1 seed to lose to a no.16 seed in the NCAA tournament. The stat was 135-0. Jairus Lyles couldn't miss for UMBC. Salt was a non-factor.

Also, there is a story circulating that Paul Henare won't be back for the Breakers.

Virginia were terrible. Got spanked, there was nothing good to say about it. as for Pauli, he's gooone

A bold move by the new owners, who clearly don't believe in seeing what you have for a season first. It says he chose not to renew but i reckon he must have been given the word from the new owners that his head was on the block. Henare did make some questionable coaching decisions, especially the offense and subs. Hang on tight Breakers fans

    @canefan

Henare has the two biggest jobs in NZ basketball so perhaps it is better that he concentrate on one. Of course, Andrej Lemanis was shit at the start of his career but they showed patience and got the rewards.

Who the Breakers get as a replacement will be key, and perhaps the likes of Vukona and Abercrombie will hold off signing a new contract until that person is announced. It could end up being a HUGE shakeup.

This style of meddling American ownership has me worried. Also has me worried regarding the Warriors with a bunch of Yanks wanting to buy that club as well.

I agree. Why not wait a year and see what you have rather than make big changes when you don't understand the landscape?

It reminds me a of a documentary on the North Harbour basketball team back in the 1980s Rheineck NZ league. There was a takeover of sorts at board level, a bunch of flash Harrys came in with big ideas about making them into a kiwi basketball juggernaut. They brought in this coach from the US who immediately benched all of their best NZ players, brought in apparently awesome imports who were rubbish, and the whole thing floundered inside a season or two

Until we know more details it appears that Henare walked, he wasn't pushed. Maybe his role was going to change with less input into player recruitment, or maybe he wants a new challenge?

Yeah, just reading between the lines. But he was a foundation player, he waited in line and finally got the job. I don't think he would walk away unless they made his position untenable

I was going to say MSU were my pick to win but they got upset by Syracuse earlier today, who many thought shouldn't have been in the tourney to start with.

Villanova, Xavier or Kansas will be favoured now. ESPN will continue to cream their pants over Duke.

Me either. Viriginia losing would have busted everybody bar UMBC supporters.

Looking at the bracket Kentucky should get out of the South, and Xavier in the West. The East and Midwest regions look harder to pick.

Back to Henare and the Breakers.

    According to Hinton:
Here's the situation as I understand it: Henare has quit his Breakers role with no replacement job to go to. It is that serious a situation.

He has not been enticed away by a better offer. A job he couldn't turn down. He just couldn't continue in this one under the new ownership group headed by Matt Walsh.

My understanding is that communication was poor between the new owners and their coach, and that what was presented to him to continue in the role did not meet Henare's satisfaction.

There was no back and forth in a search for compromise. No negotiation. And the incumbent head coach took what he perceived to be his only option. He walked away.

Abercrombie and Ili have re-signed for the Breakers. Good news.

As for March Madness, the final 4 are set. Loyola-Chicago (#11) vs Michigan (#3) and Villanova (#1) vs Kansas (#1). Good that the ESPN darlings Duke were shown the door.

That is really shit by the new owners. Surely a bit more effort to soften the exit and not lose goodwill would have been the way to go? It's not like they are picking up a club in shambles or anything, where the scorched earth approach might be warranted... wonder what the old owners think of this?

If the new Americans unveil a new yank coach untested in the NBL we are fucked. Unless they are ready to pay for a bunch of NBA players that is
