They should get Alf Daniels back from the Utah Warriors. Promote from within rather than chose an ex player.

    From mooloo.co.nz

The Waikato Rugby Union has agreed to release head coach Jono Gibbes to take up the role of Sports Director at Stade Rochelais in November following the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup.

Negotiations over the terms of the release, including compensation for Waikato, are ongoing. However, emerging out of the talks is an agreement for Waikato and Stade Rochelais to enter a partnership to enhance player and coach training and development. Waikato and Stade Rochelais expect Jono to lead the development of the partnership.

Waikato CEO Blair Foote said: “Naturally we regret the loss of Jono to Stade Rochelais. Both organisations recognise the calibre of his coaching skills and his unique ability to inspire players. Still, we are grateful Jono – who calls the Waikato home - has committed to seeing the union through the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup and to helping us build towards regaining our rightful position in the Premiership.

“We are also excited about the opportunities created by Jono’s move to La Rochelle. Waikato has already established a unique and ground-breaking partnership with the Cornish Pirates that we expect to attract and foster the development of rugby talent in the province.

“We are confident the link Jono cements with La Rochelle will build on these efforts and, through rugby, continue to make Waikato stronger.”

@mikedogz Randle must be a good chance to be promoted. He's been a club coach so earned his stripes. A Te Rapa man too!

Heard that Jono's prior club might be miffed as they'd released him to come back to NZ. I don't begrudge folks in following up on opportunities, and that sometimes stuff just arrives from nowhere. But to leave one club early on compassionate grounds, then swap a 2 year deal for a 1 year deal to chase a bigger payday (and a more grunty role to be fair), is a bit iffy imo. But I guess that is the nature of the beast!

Yeah, Ulster released him early back to Waikato for "compassionate family reasons". So to see him return to La Rochelle...

Might come to bite him though.

Will anyone sign him in the future back in NZ now, given that he'll likely scarper at a bigger offer at an inappropriate time.

He might find that in a year or so, if he wants to return that job offers are very thin. I certainly hope so, because I hate people breaking promises.
