@jk catching. Once you realise you can catch any high or hard ball hit at you, then you understand the hardness of the ball and how to combat it. If you can catch throws from the field to the stumps then you've had experience of all types of ball hurt
Sounds counter intuitive to expect this to help batting but it all ties in.

Get well fitting thigh and inner thigh pads and wear them every time in the nets.

Tennis ball practice for watching and evading short bowling. Wetting the tennis ball helps too.

Remember to point out that even the pros feel anxious with short bowling so it's normal, but it's also pretty easy to evade short stuff if you can sway and duck.

    Good luck to him

Yeah, good point on the short stuff. If you can master the sway then you suddenly feel infinitely more confident. Would expand that to ensure he has good overall defense against the hard ball - if he is comfortable getting bat on everything then that will build his confidence and he can move on to choosing which balls to have a go at.

If the kid is Year 3 or 4 (8/9 yrs old) then I'd be very surprised if there is short stuff going on. Very few kids can bowl even half well.

That said, last season one wee fella was ripping down good accurate leg spin. We were farking amazed, and he bamboozled the boys.

Also, it may not yet be 'out is out'. They usually start people with partnerships (5 overs) to get them in the groove, and only lose runs when they get out. Gives time to work on the 'yes, no, sorry' calling we're used to (and how to turn down a run)

@nzzp yeah, I tend to get a bit carried away when dishing out advice on cricket. Never to early to practice the sway though, it's a superpower against angry fast bowlers later in life.

@mariner4life bullshit. Getting hit on the thighs is exactly what he's worried about and is exactly why kids (and adults) jump away from the ball.

All the cricket brands make guards for kids so use them, they're also well designed these days. Also his heroes on tv wear them so that's a telling point of comparison.

Never too young to understand and have the right equipment for building confidence

    you're bullshit...

Realising it doesn't hurt that much will probably help him out. How many here started hard ball cricket wearing no back pad? let alone an inner thigh guard. You going to stick him in a chest guard as well?

@mariner4life good one grandad. You actually haven't spent much time with kid cricketers these days huh?
What about helmets in modern youth cricket?
