    Vent time...

I coach TR Jnrs U14 Rugby team, first game on Saturday.

For kids born 2005, it is open weight, for kids born 2004, must be under 65kg or apply for dispensation.

We have been training for quite a while, weighed in several weeks ago, applied for dispensation for this kid who is 73kg born in 2004...just this afternoon got told his dispensation has been denied.

Our club has no U15 or 16 team, so if he want to play, he has to go to another club...and he isnt keen to go up a grade as there are some quite big kids there having not played a huge amount of rugby.

What is laughable, is one of the other teams, have a couple of 2005 born kids, of 100kg+...we have (or would have) 3 boys in our team over 65kg, biggest is 75kg and he is young enough to play U13 but over weight for them.

I am so pissed off, now, tonight I have to tell him he isnt allowed to play for us...he also bought new pair of boots in the last week as well.

Think I alluded to it on another thread, they have made it far too easy for kids to fall out of the game, not to mention having coached rugby now into my 8th season, I don't need this bullshit!

    Fucking pissed!

@taniwharugby Emotions aside, it just doesn't make sense. You'd think that a one-year age difference between boys of a similar weight has less impact than a 25kg+ weight difference between boys of the same age.

And they wonder why we are struggling for numbers after primary school. Doesn’t make sense at all.

Can you appeal to the rugby union and use the other teams big boys as evidence?

Here in the Waikato I was told don't bother to apply for dispensation when my son was only about 3 kilos over. Not having a team from the club above should have helped your argument. As a kid I was dispensated and I was quite a bit over the weight limit. I had bung eyes so that helped my case.

We will be disputing it...I mean the season starts on Saturday ffs.

We have a couple of boys in our team under 40kg too...last year had one boy about 35kg who was born 31 dec 2004 needed dispensation to play...he had decided not to play this year due to still being under 40kg.

If he doesnt play for us we will have zero dispensated players...unsubstantiated, but have heard another club has 2 dispensated players...likely due to them being a country club and we arent...they suggested he played u16 for another town club.

    It defies belief really.

Bloody PC gone mad tree hugging society we live in these days.

The game is becoming taylor made for soccer mums/dads.

What happened to the days when I played JMB in the Hokianga/Bay of islands wrestling with giant bush monsters every Saturday.. I would have been 30kgs wringing wet! Loved every minute of it though..

    Harden up world!

apparently 2 kids were denied dispensation yesterday, fucking yesterday.

Our boy was actually 70.5kg, so 5.5kg over the 65kg limit, this other kid, was under 70kg.

A formal letter has been put in for both to be granted dispensation by an NRU rep.

Amusing thing is, it seems to be at odds with one of the NRU goals, as well as some of thier strategic ones...

so had a reprieve of sorts last night, with the boy being allowed to play, but they were sending someone along today to assess him to make sure he wasnt some 71kg beastly behemoth

Had a solid 45 mins inc a try before coming off injured, has been cleared to play though...this other team had 3 kids over 100kg, had a dispensated player at 83kg, but were concerns about our 71kg dispensated player...go figure.

We shoulda won too, were up 31-29 and held them out for 13 mins (long YC) with 14 players, they finally scored, he was allowed back on, then they scored again 2 mins later (right on FT) to win 41-31.

Stayed on to watch the U16 game after, man, no way would this kid have been able to play that grade, these guys are men sized with 15yr old aggro brains! Reckon 16s and 18s be the worst age group for the size and mental variance. Was a dust up in this game that an 80s league game woulda been proud of!

@taniwharugby I was at Southern later in the day for the senior game and heard there was 1x yellow and 3x red cards in that scrap...???
That’s pretty bloody full on for u16s.

Great that common sense prevailed and your lad was allowed to play.

@Gunner nah, only a YC...unless there was another in the 2nd spell after I left.

But one of the guys in the fight I saw was throwing numerous upper cuts and wasnt the one that got a YC...not sure how the ref didnt see him laying into someone.

I woulda been even more seething if he wasnt, given they had a bigger kid dispensated and he also had an U16 team he coulda played for.

@taniwharugby I was always skinny and small so played restricted weight rugby in the junior grades, and 1st 15 rugby at 63kgs. Wouldn’t be able to do that now. Only allowed to because when I dropped down the age group I was lighter than most everyone else. They have to find a way to keep as many people in the game for as long as possible by being practical and inclusive. Example, how did touch rugby become separated from Rugby? Missed opportunity.

@kev is interesting seeing some of the other teams, we look to have by far the smallest team, so will be tough going...found out today, the boy we got dispensation for, had never played rugby before either (always played soccer) no way would I have picked that, just a natural!

I was always a midget, which is why I played 9 until I grew....
