A friend just sold his 2016 m5 for a focus rs. He said in the UK it just makes much more sense for the driving he does. He never really goes far so I buy his POV.

I have the last of the V8 S5 ABT and am very happy with it. Driving set-up is sensational. Great sound never been able to get anywhere near the top end though run out of road way too soon. Did Taupo to Napier earlier this year but whilst I did open her up a little there was too much traffic to really see what it does. Plus TBH I'm just not a good enough driver to really take advantage through the corners.

i always wanted an Audi, but now i live in the tropics. I've got mates who have owned them, and they just can't handle the climate here, shit is just constantly wearing or breaking. And it's expensive.

I worked in auto industry and parts & service for a couple decades. Biggest joke in the garages were young guys with a few dollars in their pockets who buy the shiny used toy they’ve always wanted (esp. BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes) after warranties have expired and parts need replacing. They’ll bitch about the price of economy-brand oil filters, which last 8000 km for the price of a couple rolls of toilet paper, they’ll still want it cheaper and leave complaining. Keep reaching for the stars, but keep your feet planted firmly on the ground. Your wallet will thank you. Champagne tastes and all they gots is beer money (barely).

Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Some of my best reach-arounds have been from Beemer fan-bois. I love it when they whisper engine family codes into my ear at the same time.

You can spend your whole life being sensible, but where's the fun in that
Those cars are way more fun to drive than a used Toyota Corolla.
I've got an oldish Mercedes e500 with around 80,000 on the clock and it's so fun to drive. I've accepted I'm going to end up spending more on it than the guy who spent the same money on a Japanese car, but screw that, I wanna enjoy driving.
I don't scrimp on maintenance however and am religious about getting it serviced, using quality oil/ filters etc.

@mariner4life Interestingly a large number of Audi's in NZ are used imports from Singapore. Mine's NZ new but I can confirm parts are fucking eye wateringly expensive. But so's the car. I mean you can drive three of Nick's Nissan Leafs off the showroom floor for the price of one S5 - but wudyawanna?

I am probably flirting dangerously with this category.....at the risk of sounding like a total piston wristed gibbon am seriously considering buying a Lambo. Specifically a Gallardo Spyder, used, 2007-2009 model with 20k-50k miles on the clock. Am aware the service costs will be eye-watering. Any petrolheads here got some advice on these?

If you can afford it then do it. It won’t be long till you won’t be able to own anything like this so don’t put it off and miss your window. The later models were really reliable for a supercar. Use a lot of oil though, like most high perf cars, and some of the engines are really particular on what brand you must use.

Two bits of advice.

If that’s what you want, do it. But pay up and buy from a dealer, not private. See what warranty and servicing you can get. It will cost a lot to run, but so what!!!

If you are open to others, test drive them all. If I had a dollar for every prospective lambo owner who had bought an r8 or 911 instead after driving, I’d have two dollars. Word is that although they are stunning to look at, price wise there are better drives.
