Eddie’s been pretty clear about only taking 2. Not sure what’s driving it but it is a risk. No doubt someone like Ben Spencer will be conveniently holidaying in Tokyo during September....

After seeing the Bled 2 team I've been thinking that our problem is that the RWC squad isn't big enough, so you have to have utility value to get in there. Yes, been discussed before, but it is pretty shit for some good players.

If it was a 15 man game (and not 23) then 31 would be enough, but it isn't anymore and we are juggling. Looking for loose heads that can play tight, and vice versa, full backs for wings, open sides for blinds, 12s for 13s, etc.

It's bloody stupid, we should be able to have 2 players for each position (and an extra for the bench, so 30 + 8 bench spots) in case of injury. Yes, I know that it increases cost and smaller nations would suffer, but it is a world cup, the minnows aren't going to win, however many they can afford.

I suppose that you could argue that is part of the challenge, but personally I would rather see the best players playing in their best position for all countries.

Italy announce squad for Rugby World Cup

Italy head coach Conor O'Shea has announced his squad for their Rugby World Cup campaign, which kicks off against Namibia on September 22.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has confirmed his 31-man squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, in front of a packed house at the Qantas Hangar in Sydney this morning.

The squad, captained by Michael Hooper with Samu Kerevi as his deputy, boasts 1406 caps of Test experience, 200 more than the squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Japan will be Hooper’s second appearance at Rugby’s showpiece while 18 players are set for their Rugby World Cup debut.

At the other end of the spectrum, Adam Ashley-Cooper will play in his fourth Rugby World Cup becoming just the second Wallaby to ever do so after George Gregan. Ashley-Cooper has played in 17 Rugby World Cup matches, just five games behind all-time leaders Jason Leonard and Richie McCaw.

Only one uncapped player is in the squad with boom rookie Jordan Petaia included in the 31-man group. The 19-year old missed most of the 2019 Vodafone Super Rugby season following a Lisfranc injury but has since recovered to full fitness.
