@jegga Costumes and effects aside, the show held up very well. Good acting and writing.

That was the main feature of Blake's 7 and Dr Who back in the 80s, great script writing that allowed you to forgive the cheapo effects

Did we even realise they were cheapo effects back then?

Yeah half the shit they used as spaceships looked exactly like the detergent bottles in the laundry.

Not really. Shit it was great growing up in the innocence of the 70s and 80s. You weren’t privy to all of the insider story, you just enjoyed shows for what they were. The kids know too much now, and I think something of the imagination of film, TV and music is lost

@jegga I didn't really worry too much that the Cybermen were made out of spray painted plastic bottles, and that the Daleks were pretty much beaten if you lured into anywhere with stairs, or other monsters made out of egg cartons and such like. The stories were that well written and acted that they drew you in

Going up to Mangawhai Heads for the summer as a kid there were three tapes on the way: Best of the Cars, Best of Talking Heads, and the Travelling Willberries.

You need more than three tapes these days just to get you as far as Puhoi.

On rock music’s losing battle with mortality

Funnily enough I was just thinking something similar when I heard about Ocasek. Most of those pioneers are circling the drain now and soon most of my heroes will be history. Getting older sucks.

    Beats the alternative though...

Thought the article was 300 words stating the very obvious. Plus it had a very loose definition of rock.

That’s Richard Hawley. He’s got a few more years left I reckon.

My first road trip when I got a car was to Mangawhai , we thrashed Badmotorfinger on the crappy factory Datsun tape deck .

I was thinking about just that this week. The list of musicians I've seen live who have now passed away is getting longer every year.

The Cars debut album is one of the best from any band (Side 2 is killer). I cranked up that, Heartbeat City and some Eddie Money in their honour this week.

I was surprised to learn Ocasek was only a year younger than Mick Jagger and 8 years younger than Jerry Lee Lewis (The Killer is still alive!). Completely different musical generations, but not a lotta difference in age. He was a late bloomer.

Yep, as I said I’m unsure how it escaped my. Jerry Lee still being around is good news. He’ll be able to go to his wife’s high school graduation this year.

Benjamin Orr was older than I thought too (only 3 years younger than Ocasek) although he died back in 2000. Ocasek was 32 when he formed The Cars so he had paid his dues before having success.

Amazes me that Stranglers drummer Jet Black is three years older then Charlie Watts. (Both are still alive, God bless ‘em.)
