Interestingly the bottom four teams of Eng Prem have 27 of 32 titles between them. How the mighty have fallen. Wasps playing their best team so far, Soapy can't even make the bench. Umaga to start at 10 - he can come back to NZ for the Canes, thanks.

EDIT oh Sopoanga might be ill.

    Gloucester vs Worcester.

The ref is bent. The match is a good argument for the TMO, correcting the ref from making an appalling decision on a try.

Also, how is Ackerman not red carded? South Africans love raising an elbow into the tackle. I played in a game very early this year where a player got the snot flogged out of him for doing the same thing.

Haven't watched Premiership Rugby for a while. Now watching Leicester Tigers v Exeter Chiefs, and I'm surprised how often the ref just allows players diving into a ruck (clearly going off their feet). Breakdowns are really messy. Players living offside all the time, too.

Ben Smith got a red card, this morning, in the game between Stade Francais and Pau.
I'm watching Toulon v Clermont at the moment and the commentators said that Smith was "a bit unlucky". Did anyone see what happened?

@Machpants Taufua had a great game, yesterday. Very dominant in that Tigers' pack, interestingly, playing in the 7 jersey.

He was voted Fans' Player of the Match.

@Toddy unlucky in that it happened - it was careless & not intentional, but not unlucky to get a red once it happened.

Poor tackle technique too. Rugby is still struggling for the balance between protecting the head and the defenders responsibility.

To me, that's not a red card; maybe a yellow.
It's similar to Kerevi being penalised (just a penalty) for doing the same (except that first contact was with the chest) against Wales.

    He's finally playing openside?

Damn, that's a rough red on Smith, fair enough give him a yellow for being careless but it was hardly a deliberate act aiming to maim an opposition player and therefore worthy of a red.

Yes, that's a RC. Too many players fending away from their body with a forearm. If you're going to do that above someone's shoulders, you have to accept responsibility.

it looked part bracing for the hit and part fend...I can see why the red was issued, but reckon YC would have been sufficient.

If a defender comes in that high and close to you, it is reflex to raise an arm. It's going to be tough to stop those cards as players aren't doing it deliberately and red cards are unlikely to prevent them doing it. The tackler has to go lower to avoid an impact like that. Yes I know the onus is on Smith to avoid that sort of contact but it is pretty harsh.

It pains me to say it. But I agree with Hooper here. Why is Smith being penalised to compensate for someone's awful tackle technique.

If a player gets injured tackling like that they need to take some responsibility for their own actions

That's the stupidest red card decision I've seen in years. Weak sauce.

I'm not willing to say stupidest, because that is a packed field, but

It's right up there with the softest.
