I prefer my serial killers to be more calculating and in control than this.
for me it was more he was came across as a bit simple, rather than the criminal mastermind he is...I think the lack of control is something that separates him from other criminals, but it is usually combined with his genius which makes him more menacing.
One big thing to remember is that final scene;
:::
It's pretty much pulling the Usual Suspects twist. We can't trust anything we've just heard, and as the director was basing this on parts of the Killing Joke, this past/origin may be just one of the multiple choice histories that the Joke aludes to in that story (same as Ledger's Joke telling different origin stories).
Arthur may not even be the Joker.
:::
Bloody hell Kirwan, that angle went entirely over my head
-
@voodoo Yeah, it supposed to work however you like. But it also works if you know more of the source material or think it ends another way.
The director says he'll confirm what they intended at some point, but he's not confirmed anything other than this Joker will not be in a Batman film.
I think it's a pretty smart film.

I'm cool with the lack of control, I just didnt like what seemed to be a progression from mental illness to happy psycho killer

Too damn clever for this simpleton clearly 😅

Sorry To Bother You: So this was a decent but weird little movie about call centres, well kind of... Stars Lakeith Stanfield who has a very watchable screen presence, Tessa Thompson who I just don't like for some reason, Danny Glover, Armie Hammer and the Korean dude from The Walking Dead.

I felt the same, and I think they walked a tightrope morally with how he has his first kills - but my main issue with it is that I don't think it matches the films it pays homage to.
It certainly a film that evokes a lot of discussion though. The Empire podcast have had some good debates between those who love it and those who hate it.

Dedicated his win to indigenous children everywhere.
You children of refugees and immigrants, Taika says GFYs

Rare to see him almost lost for words. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt (he's trying to be an inspiration to others like him). It is a big achievement to win an Oscar, good on him

Does a Maori and Korean winning an award not count toward this much talked about diversity?

So Parasite gets the chocolates.
I'm happy with that win, it was in my top 3 picks and it's a cracking film.
I'm happy with Jojo's adapted screenplay win just so it pissed off @jegga and Robbie Collins (idiot critic from the Kermode show who did a nasty review of the movie where he displayed his ignorance of Nazi Germany and was a prick to his co-host).
Deakins won another Oscar which is good even though he should have way more ... but I'm glad 1917 didn't win the big ones.
So the Academy still don't really like Tarantino enough to give him a win it seems.

Tarantino might end up getting an award late like Scorsese. Brad Pitt seemed genuinely chuffed with his award for his part in Quentin's movie

I think he'd normally always struggle in these types of awards due to the pretty-buy ness, so I guess he's pretty stoked.

@Nepia I haven't seen any of the films yet but was most surprised that For Sama didn't win the Best Documentary. That seemed to be the heavy favourite.
Have you not seen any of just the docos or best pic noms? I actually thought this was the best bunch of best picture nominees for a long time, but it wasn't a great year for movies in general in 2019 (I should say ones that went to the cinema, I'm watching a bunch now that didn't make it the cinema in Oz).
I haven't seen any of the docos.

It doesn't piss me off, I've always movie and music awards are basically worthless opportunities for luvvies to virtue signal and give each other reacharounds and he's a dick.
So in that regard nothings changed in light of his win. -

@Nepia thanks for bringing this to my attention, its glorious. If I have a quibble its that he didn't give the kids enough credit , the boy in particular was great.
Nah, that's not the really idiotic one, it's the one from the podcast/Youtube that's particularly shitty as he tries to justify why he dislikes it with bullshit rather than just saying he didn't find it funny etc.

The bit about Moonrise kingdom is interesting, that was a weird movie like all Andersons stuff but I'd say he'd borrowed the way the characters speak to each other more than the setting if he borrowed anything from that movie or Andersons other films.

I don't remember the detail of his review and I'm not going to read it again so not 100% sure on the Moonrise Kingdom reference.
I used to dislike Collins whenever he filled it for Kermode so I was unsurprised he didn't like Jojo Rabbit.
