I see you went to Raglan. Did you try the fish n chips at the wharf?

We tried to go to Wharf Kitchen and Bar but was closed. The one right on the wharf point was open though, but didn't try it, is it good? Maybe for lunch tmrw?

It's called Raglan Fish, at the end of the wharf. It's been very good every time I've eaten there.

Think I know the one, looked fresh-as. Tomorrow 👍

@voodoo if you come to Matamata to do Hobbiton, let me know and I'll buy you a beer!

Mate, that would be brilliant, will definitely keep you posted. What I really need is an activity (Hobbiton?) that I can convince the wife to take the kids to alone, so we can hit some golf balls pre-beer!

Absolutely, Hobbiton. That will kill a couple of hours! I will take you for a hit of golf on our course (If I remember correctly we are a similar-ish height so my clubs will be good for you) Beers at course! Winning!

    Hobbiton also closed 😡

We will be driving Hamilton to Lake Rotoiti on Thursday, then the Lake to the Coromandel on Monday. Can make try to get to Matamata for a beer one of those days if you're around? Or golf if I can find another activity that will occupy the wife and kids for a few hours!

When at Rotoiti the Okere Falls Store is a decent place for a coffee or breakfast burrito. A mixture of hippy German and Mexican.
Or if later than breakfast this sounds good
    KIM JONG SUPREME BURGER
APA brined Korean chicken, miso maple bacon, coriander slaw and kimchi with sesame sriracha aioli and hop-salted crispy shallots on a Bread Asylum bun, served with a side of Proper Crisps (GF & VE available)
    $20

I'll file that away for future reference. I love Korean food.

Coromandel - would you guys stay at Whangamata, Whitianga, or Coromandel town (or somewhere else?). Not Pauanui/Tairua. Going to stay 3 nights I reckon. Ideally want a central place to explore from, with easy access to cafes, the odd restaurant etc

hard to know what is open. IMO Coro town is the nicer 'more quaint' option. Whanga and Whiti are pretty built up.

Somewhere like Hahei or HWB could be an option. Not far to Whitianga if you need to go, central enough for exploring. Should have places open.

What do you want to see on the Coromandel Peninsula? Don't be expecting heaps of options for restaurants/cafes outside of Whitianga and Whangamata.

If the ferry (Ferry Landing) is operating you can easily get from Hahei to Whitianga but the drive is more of a hassle. Not far to HWB and I am sure Cathedral Cove will be very quiet. Yes, I would recommend visiting those places.

Hmm, better check that. We don't need loads of options for food, but a couple of cafes and a takeaway thai/Chinese / pizza/ chippie are always welcome

Otherwise we'll ust be cruising, not trying to do everything. Kids are still homeschooling so limited time in the day

@voodoo Have a look on Google Maps to see what eateries there are at the beach towns. I have a soft spot for Hahei having spent summer holidays there with the family as a kid. Back then the general store was all that mattered. 🙂

I would stay at Cooks Beach and stay in a decent AirB&B. Chances are you will have a sea view. They have a decent bistro that does low and slow food and the hottest chicken wings ever.

2 mins drive is a 30 second ferry (less than 150 metres) that takes you to Whitianga for other cafes, restaurants and shopping.

    Best of both worlds.

Wow! I am super surprised at that price. OK, well I think Whitianga is prolyl the best of the bunch as a whole lot of other things to do close.

We had a bach in Whangamata for 30 years and I love the place but I loved to fish and surf so it was perfect. Whitianga as a town is better.

So that's 1 x vote for Coromandel, 1 x vote for Hahei, and 1 x vote for Whitianga.

Fricken Fern, no bloody consensus as always!!!

I would choose coromandel if you can spare 1/2 a day for a fishing charter.

The top pub does a mean steak. It's owned by an ex NZ Basketball player (reasonably well known but typically, I can't remember his name)

Bottom pub has a TAB 🙂

If you do a charter, take your fish to the fish and chip shop near the bottom pub and they will fillet it for you and cook it for you!

@voodoo they also do Flounder, eggs and chips for breakfast which is amazing for a hangover!
