@donsteppa A remarkable test attendance effort. How he would have loved watching the 28 - 00 whooping of South Africa at 1999 Carisbrook test.
The modern day commentators don't hold a patch on the Old Timers like Trevor Rigby, Alan Richards, Peter Sharp, Colin Sneddon and that pommy guy Jim someone from Christchurch (apologies for not being able to recall his last name). Thankfully we still have Wadds but he seems to be on the outer now with the change in radio cricket broadcasters, and then there was the uniqueness of good old Ron Snowden who, age and time wise, doesn't really fall into the "old timer" category of the others mentioned.
Ahhh I still have great memories of the "lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer" and Sports Roundup. Summer just ain't the same without it.
Thanks for the memories and good times Iain.

@bovidae He only did one thing - overblown histrionics - but he was the master of the art. It was like he heard Nick Drake and thought "I'm going to be exactly unlike that".

    RIP Jim

Michael Collins - the 3rd astronaut on Apollo 11 who orbited the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin did the walking.

Michael Collins, 90, was part of the three-member crew on Apollo 11, the first lunar landing mission in 1969. Unlike Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, he never walked on the moon. Collins stayed behind and piloted the command module as it circled above. Because of that, Collins is often called the 'forgotten astronaut'.

Further to Steve McKean, I don't remember that win v Aus, but I do know that is one of NZ Sport's iconic moments.

Condolences t ok Mrs McKean and family.

They showed the John Hill tip-in on the TV news tonight.

McKean's personality was very different to another US coach, John Dybvig.

I can def. remember it. Played a lot of basketball then, and the team watched the game at a pub (1860 tavern IIRC). One of our team was on the fringes of the NZ team and was actually in tears when the buzzer went.

Think Steve McKean was also instrumental in developing the structure of the game in NZ as well.

McKean did heaps for basketball and for years he worked out of the limelight as well. Seemed like he helped all and any nz basketball basically 24/7.

    Some names from the era:
    McKean
Dyvbig - really effective commentator, mixed expert knowledge with yank enthusiasm
    Kenny McFadden
    Angelo Hill
Stan Hill - often the difference as he was like a third import, except better!
    John Hill
    Nick Costley
    Tony Rampton
....fuck thought I knew heaps more, damn old brain!
And yet I can picture heaps of it, (mcfadden hitting a buzzer 3 for the Exchequer Saints - cool name- in a final.
Anyway McKean was a household basketball name.

Can youse fullas remember others from the Stan Hill days in remembrance of the man that lit the fire of nz basketball?

    Dyvbig,

    Kenny McFadden

Was a golden time of NZ basketball.

Still recall McFadden winning a championship with a last minute shot and I'm pretty sure it was Dybvig who gave it the "he did it godammit, it he did it"

Saints were the glamour team growing up in the Hutt (pre-Shakers days), they were stacked. I still remember going to games at a sold out Madgwick Stadium when the Rheineck or Countrywide League was at it's peak. McFadden, Hill, then Boagni, and a host of then NZ reps. The loud music, the antics of the gorilla mascot, the showmanship, it was all in stark contrast to going to the rugby
