Coronavirus - Australia

@gt12 I've seen reports of similar "safety" measures regarding babies, hospital flights and unaccompanying parents earlier in the pandemic regarding crossing state borders and regions. Might be msm stirring up as usual but I felt the same despair.
William Wall, a 14 year old autistic kid died in September in Victorian bushland when the state government limited the number of searchers for him due to fears the search party spreading covid. Locals, who are best equipped to find a local lad in local conditions were not allowed to search en masseSuccessfully searching for a lost kid is a numbers game
The boy died all alone a mere few kilometres from his home. The thought of that makes me shudder
Seriously, there's some sick shit going on in Australia

@siam My god that is awful. I watch the news and read, but hadn't seen anything about it. That should have had some big coverage.
Now we have mass media coverage about cricketer who used some inappropriate words or terms a decade ago making headlines. Where the fuck do I live.

no, there is no coverage. there is next to no scrutiny on any fucking thing around any of it. Few questions are raised.
It's a heady mix of public apathy and fear. Basically i think a huge amount of it is the public thinking that "if we shut up, keep our heads down, don't say anything, we can go back to the pub. If we don't we'll end up in lockdown again".
And it has worked, state government elections have been landslides.
Scott Morrison being the bumbling dumb fluffybunny that he appears to be has waited too long and will probably get the blow back.

@mariner4life Can see why you guys are getting pissed off over there.
Bad enough here when they lock AKL down and I get included, nowhere near AKL.

the state government stuff is pure politics. And it fucked with a huge amount of people's lives unnecessarily. We abandoned the running of the country to a handful of unelected bureaucrats.
The federal government haven't been any better, and have given the states a person to point at.

and I suspect that melbournian that drove through NSW to be positive in QLD will likely spark the next over reaction from states..watch this space

my heart fell when i read that and then saw Jeanette Young in front of a press conference.
Cairns will be in lockdown followed by a mandatory mask mandate by 5pm. Western Australia is priming to turn around flights.
Sydney will shrug, but Gladys Barelyjiggling will make snide comment.
Jacinda will get the RNZAF to shoot down planes from Brisbane. I'm not sure with what, but she'll try.

i just used the tried and true template from the last 15 months.
sadly.

incidentally, if i could get all "sovereign citizen" for a second
how long do the state governments have the power to fine us for moving around, and the ability to force us in to hotel quarantine at our own cost for the privilege of moving around inside our own country? Is this finite? Or is this just a thing they can do now?
-
@mariner4life i think they have to keep voting for the powers to be extended

so, perpetuity then

@mariner4life might depend on a number of politicians trying to endear themselves with the common man by voting against next time

Booked in for the jab this morning - there's heaps available so at 2PM I'm driving over to one of the local jaboratories to see what's what.
Perfect day for it. Miserable, cold, and got no meetings at work. Plus I deserve a medically-induced break after sorting out a fuckup this morning in our cloud services.
The fucking idiot who renamed a heap of mission-critical configuration can have COVID sprayed all over their face as far as I'm concerned. All the variants.

@voodoo That chart is BS. Be interesting what date National decided to choose to run it. Typical fucking politicians. Just screams for a counter add showing deaths per 100 for the same countries. Meaningless stats - If Israel had delivered 150 jabs per 100 people then they would have had to have delivered over 12 million doses (Popn 8.72 Mill). World in Data says they have fully vaccinated 5.14 Mill and partly vaccinated 314K.
NZ's lagging but not that far behind. It's all down to what happens in the next 1/4
-
@dogmeat from memory we’re basically stuck till that batch of 1 million arrives from Pfizer in July. At which point our numbers should (should!) double very quickly. Interestingly I’ve just had a text to book my Covid vax, just have to wait the balance of two weeks from my flu jab on Monday…

I'd guesstimate maybe a week or so back. It's legitimate enough. A more recent update of that data (from a Canadian dude) is here, centre chart:
https://trevortombe.github.io/covidgraphs/oecd
Israel, on that chart (and to be fair, voodoo's) is at a tad over 120 jabs per 100 people.
The antipodeans are off the pace. Not purely due to apathy, as some have suggested, although there is some of that. It is mostly to with slowness and shortage of supply.
Bear in mind the comparison is the OECD, which is heavily membered in Europe. Once the EU overcame their shambolic start, they sourced and rolled out their vaccines quickly. We're still a month or so behind them.

yeah the same thing that saved us in the first place is the same thing slowing everything down. being miles from absolutely everywhere
-
@mariner4life - yeah, also due to having less 'weight' than the big dogs. Having said that, I still give a partial boot up the bum to the Aus government (while leaving enzedders to comment on NZ) for being slightly late to the punch on vaccine purchasing and putting a chunk of, albeit not all, the eggs in one basket.
They bet big on the local Melbourne manufacture of AZ to be the answer, but that only partly paid off. Bad luck perhaps, but we then had to scramble for extra RNA type imports.
