@crucial said in Mountain biking?:
@antipodean is that a frame crack?
Minor problem with the crankset when 75% of the bolts shear/ undo.

Blind old man am I! My eyes were drawn to the bottom of the frame there but I guess that is just the protective film.
Locktite is your friend on those bolts (as I am sure you know)

@antipodean what's the rear tyre you are running there? Unusual tread.

@crucial IIRC it's a Maxxis Crossmark. Great for summer on dry trails.
Cheers. They look good for summer in Queenstown. Dry well formed flow tracks with fast corners.

Looks nice. Manual lockouts on Shock and Fork?
Yeah mate all manual. I've never ridden a bike set up another way and to be honest hardly use the lock out as on the rare occasion I have locked it out for a climb, I've then forgotten to unlock before I've fired off down the other side! Dropper though gets much more work.

Droppers are a game changer. Couldn't bear not having one.
Yep, you do have to have a little mind routine before racing off downhill. If I have just climbed then I tell myself to adjust dropper and release fork lock.
I did go the whole way down a mountainside in Scotland that had steps for walkers with my fork locked. Was rather a rough ride!
If I rode a full suss I would be looking to lock the rear uphill though. Bugger expending energy into the shock, it's hard enough already. -
Found a decent trail network that was shutdown about 5 years ago that still appears to be regularly ridden and semi-maintained.
Snuck in there on sat arvo for a few hours and found it to be pretty decent. Felt a bit sketch riding past the "no mountain biking" and "closed" signs but enjoyed the trails and will be back for sure. All NZ native sort of stuff and heaps of bird life. Good fun!

Well I can tell that is wasn't at this end of the country as there is no sign of mud! Pretty waterlogged around here at the moment.
A little pet hate of mine is tards that cut up trails when wet and leave the repairs for others.

Yeah this trail was surprisingly good but also doesnt get a huge amount of action. Was also sat arvo so hadn't rained for a few days. Wouldnt be riding there today after the rain we've had.
The place I really like to ride is riverhead but those are clay based trails and are a total mess right now so big avoid during winter.
Cutting up trails annoys me too. Especially when people lock up the back brakes and drag the back wheel down. Better to just send it and sort it out down the bottom!

Couple of ok rides on the weekend.
20km solo out on the woodhill trails on friday arvo. Perfect conditions.
Then 10km of trails with the lad on sat arvo at the secret location. Cool spot and did some trail clearing too for a bit of extra karma.
But was a bit jealous when a good mate of mine and her gfs did the Timber Trail over the weekend. Looked amazing and nailed it with the weather, even if a bit cold.
-
This weather sucks! Managed a short ride today but had a lot more planned.
Did a family walk on a track I rode a few years back. Can see why it was so tough but super keen to do it again.
Also managed a session with my son at woodhill mid last week. It’s riding brilliantly out there at the moment. May go there again mid this week when back to Auckland
Oh and hit this secret trails again last weekend. This time solo. Starting to get a bit more moisture in them now
-
Too much moisture in the local trail at the moment. Being full of natives, its very rooty and gets super slippery in these conditions.
Ended up having a wee bail and caught the knee on the pedal and one of the pins went straight in below the knee. Not a huge amount of blood but boy did I feel sick. Went super queasy real fast and was lucky not to lose my lunch. Couldnt walk later that night but has free'd up alot so should be back on the bike later this week
-
@jk Ouch.
Maybe invest in some wet tyres? Most are made as Muds which isn't really what you want for recreational riding IMO. They are basically longer tapered spikes designed to clear out the mud instead of it accumulating eg Wetscreams and are useful if you race in winter.
In NZ bush conditions, as you say, the biggest problem is slippery roots (and rocks). That's where something like a Schwalbe Magic Mary comes into play. Good at clearing mud but those little cuts on the end of the spikes do a remarkable job of providing grip.
My son had some wets for DH racing (can't remember the brand now) which had a similar design and most of the sponsored riders were using their supplied Maxxis which simply didn't grip in NZ bush anywhere near as well. Had a pro rider test them at speed and he was pretty amazed at the difference on the roots.
-
Yeah I dont think Muds would help too much but those magic mary's could be a good option.
My setups usually pretty good for the roots, think there was actually a fair bit of rider error involved in this one.
Worst was that I didnt have the knee protection on and often dont at this place as I ride there from home.

That Olympic course is pretty cool. Just get rid of those nasty ups and I’d ride it.
Yeah it wasnt too bad eh. Certainly better than I expected. Those XC guys dont really like the drops and jumps but was good to see a few decent obstacles in there for them.
