@tim I've seen several more rumours: Hurricanes and Chiefs (to replace Dmac).

Chiefs would make sense and I honestly wouldn't complain. We've talked a lot here about how getting out of Dunedin would be good for him. I'd happily accept him.

    Moana would also make sense.

Apologies if this has already been covered above... but does MP have any significance in terms of national team eligibility, or is it pretty much a 6th NZ Super team?

e.g. currently to get selected for the ABs you need to play for one of the 5 NZ teams. Will that remain the same, or can they select MP players?

Born and educated in Auckland. I'd say MP is highly on the cards, although in the absence of DMac he would be a reasonable pickup for us.

I’d take Gatland back, he was really coming into his own

In general a bit gutted, I know he hasn’t been on top form for a while but we just don’t have the depth to loose these kinds of guys with X factor

I’ll be even more gutted if gutted if he doesn’t go to MP, I can at least convince myself it’s for the greater good etc

For whatever reason, the Landers hasn't worked out for him, whether that is on him (partying etc) or them (bringing in another established 10 right as he was getting going). Either way, I hope he goes OK as we need another young 10 who can be international quality and he has that ability - whether he can fully develop it or not is another question.

@gt12 I’ve seen a lot of comments about hunt coming in ruining his career, displacing him

Hunt mainly played 15 and covered 10 in SRA 2020 and ioane 10…and he just didn’t fire, hints just plane outplayed him over the last couple of seasons

I’d like to think Otago/highlanders made him as much as anything, we didn’t bring him in as an ab or anything

Sorry, in my post, I meant since Hunt came on board as Otago and the Landers did well to give him an opportunity and get him noticed. But then it was clear that they wanted competition for the 10 spot, and it doesn't seem to have worked the way they wanted (or did it?).

I don't rate his defense, I do rate his passing, his running comes and goes, and his kicking can be atrocious and brilliant within 2 minutes (so he'll probably fit in well at the Chiefs!) but I feel that if he committed to his talent he could be very very good.

I also wonder if this is related to Tony Brown playing less and less of a role at the Landers. Joane doesn't seem to be the roll up your sleeves, kick for the corners, Landers style of 10. As you mentioned, Gatland and others have suited their style, although they were only champions when they had a guy who could light things up a bit.

@gt12 all pretty fair..although I’m not sure tony was a role up the sleeves kick for the corners 10 and he defiantly isn’t that type of coach, he famously came up with Limas face back kick over the head move

Tony’s still head coach next year isn’t he?

    @kiwiwomble

Brown is on record as saying he is willing to step away as Head coach and let Dermody take over in 2022, and I don't think you have him at all in 2023. He's not contracted by NZR.

I also don't think that Brown is that kind of coach, but I'm not sure about his replacements,. Also, the Landers have been been a team that kicks a lot, and that may be another thing which may make a player such as Joane less valuable (given that his passing/running game is his best feature).

This is just idle speculation of course, it's the fern. But, I'm interested in why he would leave as I don't think that MP will be a better team than the Landers. But, starting at 10 and playing a run game that suits your style might make some sense.

Edit: it could also be that the Landers booted him for partying, I doubt we will know.

As far as we know, ABs won't be selected from MP, anymore than they will from Drua or Ozzie teams. MP are going to operate similar to NZ SRP teams, in that most will have to be eligible for Samoa/Tonga, bu there will be a limited number for those that are capped elsewhere/not Pacific Islands qual - trying to get some almost retiring stars, I guess, a bit of experience.

We’ll that’s annoying and not good for MP as he might have been the kind of player to kick start them

I wonder if the landers see Sam Gilbert as a back up 10

Some poor planner seeing as gatland left to get more time at 10 with the chiefs too

I like the new SR comp with one exception, remove the 3 random games.

I'd also like to see an old style top 5 instead of practically everyone making the finals. Alternative is those three games get replaced by a Japanese team, an Argie team and one form the US. If the US teams isn't strong enough, maybe have two from Japan?

8 finalists out of 15 would be better, otherwise 5 of 12 is good.

    Like the name.

I'm surprised, but also pleased, because once it became clear that Dmac was off, we were left without a Super quality first five (or at least one that suits our fast-paced gameplan), so he is a good addition. I imagine it may also mean that the Chiefs are not that confident of getting Dmac back (although this could be only a one-year deal).

The franchises need a minimum of 6 homes games each year to be financially viable. This format guarantees 7 home games. The problem with the extra 3 games is that if the NZ teams play only NZ teams, it's not that different from SRA, and we heard the criticism of playing so many high intensity games.

No way do we want an Argentinian team, too much travel for one team. Two Japanese and a USA team would be ideal.

Isn't travelling to and from the US just like travelling to and from Argentina?
