Coronavirus - Australia

It's a deliberately high target but I'm encouraged by the messaging coming out of NSW. Now that people I care about are vaccinated, I don't care about those in the remaining 20-30% who elect not to be vaccinated.
What will be interesting is how places like WA, SA and Qld pivot.
I think SA will be pretty good given they’ve historically had the largest proportion of people aged 65+ than any other state (I think Tassie might be right there with them).
The challenge is the other two states, but one is saying nothing to see here we are Covid free (WA) and the other is saying ridiculous things in the parliament today about kids and trying to scaremonger (Qld)

It never makes sense politically to hitch your wagon to an outcome you can't fully control. Double that for something like COVID where you have to think after NZ and Victoria an irreversible breach is just a matter of time.
Therefore the only conclusion I can draw is that Palaszczuk genuinely believes what she is saying here and that through a mix of the current protocol and Billy Moore screaming Queenslander repeatedly they and their kids will safe?

Bit weird isn't it? Thing is that even she and McGowan are 100% successful at controlling COVID for a few more months, at some point they have to let it in when we reach 80% (or whatever number McGowan thinks should apply to WA). And then they run the risk that by opening the borders, which would be both inevitable and popular, it looks like failure even though they've actually been very successful

that was pretty fucked aye?
it's easy to see where my pessimism comes from. In all honestly it looks like they are reaching for reasons to stay shut. I genuinely don't know why?

@mariner4life because the Palace Chook is a fucking dickhead?
Because WA is still operating under the belief that their strong resources sector makes them utterly independent of everyone for as long as they like?

176 cases in vic....fuck

@mariner4life cheers. It was either that or

the really are clueless though, it was only 2 days again they were happy to say in the official press conference they thought we had hit a plateau and were getting it under control

thought her little rant in Parliament yesterday had one interesting part
she can't open the borders and let Delta in because the health system would collapse. Who is in charge of the state health system? The State Government. Which party has been in power since the mid-90s (except for one 3-year period?) her party.
The cynic in me says there is no government support given because they can't afford it, and the overwhelming thing driving her decision making is that she knows there is no capacity at all in the health system. Because of decades of financial mis-management and a bloated public service.
Nah, it's all the CHO's call...

If I recall correctly didnt she and her health expert use the same "but the kids!" strategy as to why QLD would not allow AZ to be used more frequently as well?
Clearly that line works up your way

@bayimports no one will take AZ in Qld because both her and the CHO went on TV and said it will kill 18 year olds.
It's small, but there might finally be a bit of tide turning up here. This shit, along with letting the NRL families in, and people are starting to get the shits.

and she is also wondering why vax rates are slower and of course its always a federal problem.
As for the NRL families, well its anyone who brings cash isnt it? the family part is just a small part of it, but makes a nice story. I am sure when the NRL said we will bring these games to your local economy but the families must be allowed to be a part of it, that was probably how the deal was done. I would suggest it was also more thank likely all about the money!

of course it was, and i don't have a problem with it. Having all the NRL here has been great for several regional areas.
however, when you are denying everyone else and calling it a "health decision" then you are taking the piss
When you also publicly say that the decision was the CHO's you are abdicating responsibility to an unelected official who is leaving the post in 2 months to become the Governor
It stinks. And i am sick of it. And i am sick of the distinct lack of pushback. And yes i am sick of the uncertain future because the government have already backed out of their agreement re the borders.
