@antipodean said in Coronavirus - Australia:
Melbourne emergency department nurse and mother-of-three Jill Dempsey has become the first healthcare worker in the country to die of Covid-19 following thousands of infections acquired by doctors and nurses in Victorian hospitals.
Medical groups have expressed shock and sadness at the loss of the respected and hardworking nurse, who died in Box Hill Hospital’s ICU unit.
Ms Dempsey, who worked at the Angliss Hospital in Melbourne’s east, was fully vaccinated and did not have underlying health conditions, making her an extremely rare case of a death in a fully vaccinated individual.
Known underlying health conditions

I can see one from the photo.

So Australia is at 87% fully vaccinated. 92% have the first dose. Even the laggard states are 77% fully vaxed. It fucked defies belief that this country isn't completely open, to each other and to the world. States are still putting people in to Quarantine. States are requiring Covid tests for entry (and might still put you in quarantine).
NZ is at 86% fully vaxed, why in the fuck are trans-tasman borders not open?
Why are we all so blasé about this? I do not get it.
This is, without a doubt, the greatest exercise in gaslighting the world has ever seen.
The wife and i were talking about our trip to Tassie this morning, and i straight up said i still don't expect to go. It's in less than a month. how sad is it that this is still a realistic way of thinking?

@mariner4life As Dr Scott Atlas, professor of public health at Stanford University, said:
Australia had illustrated the folly of lockdowns and the “shocking power of governments to shut down everything – schools, businesses, personal movement and even the right to see your own family”.“Australia had an explosion of cases with some of the most draconian policies imaginable,” he said, speaking to The Australian about his new book, A Plague Upon Our House, which is highly critical of the US Covid-19 response and two of Mr Trump’s other health advisers, Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx.
“As an American, and I think it applies to Australia, I think it’s shocking how people acquiesce to this sort of thing.”
-
"explosion" is a bit of an exaggeration, 1,400 odd people yesterday, other countries have 10's of thousands
-
The Premier of my state, once we hit the 80% mark they have decided on, will "open" the borders.
And she'll stand in a press conference with a self-satisfied grin on her face, and say "well done Queenslanders" and she'll reward us with allowing people to visit our businesses, and families to re-connect.
And i will have to physically restrain myself from throwing something at my screen.

goddam i just knew you would come in here and say something like that
-
@mariner4life i actually agree with a lot of what you've said, we should be open with such high rates of vax, at very least between states and NZ/PI
i just figure we're past cases being relevant, even Dan andrews admitted that the other day, and life within states is large back to normal so of course cases are going up, we have very strict border rules....but very much released day a to day rules

You have the timeline wrong. The lockdowns aren't in place now so comparing numbers from yesterday means nothing.

@antipodean apologies if i misunderstood, @mariner4life was talking about the current restrictions so assumed your post and the comment were in relation to that

Tassie is implementing a vaccination mandate on going to the pub. It's only just coming in
Tassie is 88% fully vaxed
I thought everyone getting vaccinated was supposed to make life return to normal?
-
@antipodean i saw that and assumed because it was so stupid it was a simple mistake
-
So at 80% vaxed, the Qld govt is proudly announcing the State is opening in a few days and the media is lapping it up. All seems well and good but that rule about needing a Covid test 72 hours before entering the state is a royal pain in the arse, especially if you were hoping to pop down to a hotspot (eg all of NSW, Victoria) for a night or two over Christmas. It's easier for them to come up here than it is for us to go down there. Ridiculous.

don't forget now also Adelaide because of a case
i before you come, one at 5 days after you get home. At $150 a pop
fuck you Anna
Also, can i just say, having a fucking vaccine mandate that affects staffing, but no legislation around it, is the absolute worst piece of "governing" you can think of.

I'll give this thread a bump.
I'm down in Melbourne for work this week. Interesting to note that mask wearing and checking in is way more lax here than in Sydney. Me and my workmate were the only two wearing masks as we entered our restaurant for lunch and often times were stopping to check in to places and people just barrelled past and didn't check in.
In fuck you Covid news, Miss Jacksons, my favourite Melbournian cafe has closed down. I go there on every single trip to Melbourne even if it means getting up at stupid early hours (well for me anyway) so I can get in to work on time. I think it was run or staffed by Kiwis too as they always had NZ kids books.

Definitely hit and miss down here on the covid checkin. I went into a large retail store earlier today and the person at the entrance actually asked if I had a covid vaccine certificate. Most stores just check your QR checkin. Some don’t have anyone checking and having even altered their entrance to filter people through a common point.
Sad to hear about Miss Jackson’s. Hadn’t been there since last year during one of our brief openings.
