Another DRS appeal Shane Watson would be proud of. Funny how Wags was egging him on to review 😁

To be fair it did end up being umpires call. It looked more plumb than it was.

The ball tracker had it dead on middle stump didn't it?

Nope. It was just top of bail.
    Cricinfo description:

2.3 130.9kmh, really loud and confident appeal for the inswinger, given out, Erwee chats with Elgar and reviews it just in time. So this is what Southee had been trying for, with his inswingers on the pads. Replays show it pitched on middle, swung in past the inside edge, no bat confirmed, and hit him slightly high on the pad, and ball-tracking says "umpire's call" marginally. So Erwee walks back but SA don't lose a review 12/1

We didn't score enough runs but SA are making a mess of this.

That was a very soft dismissal.

Anyone noticing that Sparks "down the wicket" coverage sometimes has the pitch slightly to the side of the screen?

It's a bit weird. Not sure if I approve.

From behind you mean? They have a camera on tracks behind the wicket

That's the best test innings I've seen dG play... bit disappointing though that most of the lower order couldn't build long enough partnerships with him so we could get closer to their 1st innings total, anyway, overall that was a bloody good fightback.

Southee these days is a rank #11 somehow still living on distant past glories to bat higher up.

I came to say exactly that.

Last three years Tim averages 9, Wagner averages 25 and Henry (very small sample of course) 39.

And Southee's average must be elevated by that excellent 35 or so in the WTC which proved vital.

That's the frustration, he has a ability to do so much better but just lacks the application and his attitude seems to be grandfathered in from the McCullum "express yourself" era. Even if he just tried to last 20 balls before getting free reign it would make a huge difference.

Day 4 shapes up for one of those days that you watch test cricket for. NZ will have to back themselves to have SA all but bowled out in the first session and give their batsman the best part of two sessions to score ~250-270. If SA show some resistance then NZ could be all but out of the game at lunch. Pretty much a carbon copy of the last two India vs SA tests...

With Kane I would say we would be marginally ahead here. 250-270 is just one solid innings by a top order batsman and not a total collapse down the other end. 300+ though would seem unattainable pretty quickly with this line up if Latham and Conway were to go cheaply.

Sorry meant a day and two sessions.

Even though this pitch seems fairly docile I don't think it isn't a road either even mid 200s could be knocked off comfortably on the final day with Maharaj coming into play. We've seen most batsmen have gotten stuck in the mud for long periods.

If we bowl them out shortly after lunch then time won't be an issue we can bat at 2 RPO if needed and not worry about the game getting away.

@rotated when we finished 80 behind in the first innings it was strong advantage SA. To win, we'd need to both bowl well and then bat well.

If we let them get over 200, the batting is going from 'bat well' to bat incredibly well with a heroic innings. IF they get 250+, it's getting towards miracle time.

Fun fact; highest chase at Hagley was 201 for Aus, losing only 3 wickets. I don't think the wicket will come into play too much (fingers crossed the rough isn't massive).

Yet another pivotal session. Great fun to watch in terms of entertainment.

Yeah, I think we're cooked already.

Batting has failed without Kane any time there is any scoreboard pressure.

Will be chasing minimum 300, I'd think.

    love your work.

There's no way we can roll through the last 5 wickets quickly. Wags is a spent force, and Henry is a one trick pony.

Bizzare not to start with Wags with a new ball 25 overs away at the start of the day. Should have just let him off the leash and bowl 12 on the trot if required.

when we ended up only 70 behind them i thought the best thing for us would be to keep the run rate right down and force SA make uncomfortable decisions around runs and times

it's weird to say, but by keeping the RR close to 3 and taking wickets, we might have put ourselves in a tougher spot.

unless of course we run thought them this morning
