The whole thread is us moaning about Holland and his selections.
Well some of it is, I might pick differently, but I not part of caoching staff, and surely don't claim to know more about game plan etc to say too much.
-
@canes4life he's such a muppet.
This "trusting people to do a job" crap is nonsensical
Pick the players who we know CAN do the job, or at the least, have a lot of upside (ie R Love and the young loosies)
Princep, Blackwell etc can do a job, but it's a decidedly average job which will never win a title.
Does Holland want the Canes to be average? Or does he want to try and win a comp?
His acceptance of mediocrity sucks.
such an idiot and it's a shame no one else in the Canes setup seems to care
-
@foobanz I guess the only ones that care are the likes of PUJ, Iose and Flanders who must be thinking wtf do we have to do to get a start. I will be pissed if they all decided to move at the end of the year because of this idiot.
-
@dan54 the problem I have with PUJ is they always drop him and never give him a run.
J Savea has been good. He should definitely be in the 23 but personally I wouldn't start him over PUJ at 12 or Goosen on the wing
You don't need to play Iose at 7, Ardie can play there
I was a Kirifi fan (I remember him killing Wainui in the final for Norths a few years back) but he gives away too many penalties.
I just think there are better loose forward options
Even Gibson is unlucky to make the 23 I think he was strong last week
-
@dan54 genuine question - what game plan have you observed from the Canes the first few weeks?
week 1 if the plan was to kick the ball to Jordan, and try and beat the Saders up front, they sure did follow it well. Not a very good plan though.
When they gave that away we were much more threatening
week 2 I thought the Blues controlled the ball for the most part, so didn't give us much of a chance to play with it. When we did have it, we were deadly

Not trolling just being sarcastic. Every Canes match selection results in an uproar about selection.
None of you admit that he got it right with the bench mixture last week. Maybe it was deliberate to finish the stronger team. Risky move but it paid off.
(Edit: @Winger gives him alittle credit in a fewposts time sohe's not included in this comment)

So he got it wrong for 65 mins and got it right for 15? That still sounds a lot like getting it wrong,

I think you're kind of missing the point. Our bench won it because most of them should be starting.
I don't think selecting a weak 15 to rely on your bench to win it every week is the right idea. We were behind by heaps and were lucky to win that. Blues ran out of gas.

Lol he didn't get it right because I doubt scoring 3 tries in the last ten minutes was part of the plan. For 65+ minutes the Hurricanes failed to fire any real shot against the Blues.
We only won because the players he continuously neglects came on and showed why they should be starting. That's where the selection frustration comes in every week. Holland seems to pick his mediocre favourites, over form.
-
I'm not saying that he got it right. Absolutely 3 tries to win is not the position you want to be in. Blues players hadn't played much footy in a very long time. Good chance that they would weaken.
However, what I never see acknowledged is that this is a season that requires player management and that it is also a 23 man game that can involve strategy around subs.
It isn't always a case of putting out your best XV and put the next best on the bench. It has been proven that doing that ends up with a compromised team by the pointy end of the season. -
Delany is 1.94. Blackwell 1.90. 2 short locks. Even so will be good to see how Delany goes. Don't really rate him (too short for a great lock and too slow for a 6)
It seems now that if Blackwell, Proctor, Julian and Prinsep are fit 9/10 they will start. Even playing out of position. There is the odd exception like week 1 (Prinsep didn't start). I don't see Proctor as a 2nd 5 but still. They won last week so will give Holland some leeway. But I thought this was one game where the Canes would start as favourites but not now
Maybe Im wrong again though. As I was last week when I saw the team
-
@crucial we're not saying to pick the exact same 15 each week, but Holland has favourites, and unfortunately, they're not very good - yet he goes with them week in and week out
Play guys like Princep against the Force, not in the top 15
He also never settles on key positions, the halves & midfield change each week

I can't see why Booth keeps getting selected either. He is too ponderous putting pressure on your First Fives IMO.
Judd was 100% better we he has come on the last 2 weeks.Yea I have been a bit surprised by Booth, he use to be snappy as, but seems to have slowed down his pass / decision making this year
Too much 1 on 1 time with TJ perhaps, lol
-
@foobanz He seems to have been around a far bit - Highlanders (played once), Blues (zero games), Newcastle (played once), Sunwolves (twelve games) as well as the Hurricanes and two tournaments for the NZ Sevens without spending long periods at any of them with the exception of five seasons (2015 WTG, 2018, 2020, 2021 - injured- and 2022) at the Hurricanes (and even then has only played 11 games). Despite that he made "a massive impact throughout the 2020 Super Rugby season" so that must resonate with Mr. Holland for what it is worth. https://www.hurricanes.co.nz/squad/player/jamie-booth/

So I take it you against Love playing at 10 as he was the one doing a lot of the kicking to Jordan? Genuine question does anyone think players are sent out and told to kick down a 15's throat?
I wouldn't of started Savea over PUJ at 12 either, but he didn't do too bad, and I would say same with starting him over Goosen, but I not privy to what is happening at training and what the plans are.
As for Ardie at 7, I like him there , but as an 8 he was good enough to be picked in WR's team of the year last year, and he's the starter for at 8 for ABs so think he gets probably first choice there. And this is someone who has been singing Iose's praises on here for last couple of seasons (not only after last weeks game). I think he may just have to be bench player until Ardie needs a break, which he will with how he plays. I actually thought Gibson was ok at 7 last week, and Kirifi is someone I think is pretty ok, not sure of number of penalties he gives away compared to other 7s, I just notice hic because he is who I swear at in my team! -

Losing Sangster is significant, but surely the Canes are still strong favourites this week. I would certainly have Iose starting, but don't see too much else to worry about. I am surprised no comment on the error rate of the Canes front rowers last week. e.g. Aumua was loose in contact. Less pressure on them this week, so you might get better results from the starters on the back of less errors.

One comment that always makes me smile a bit is when we say a coach has his favourites so they keep picking them. It is true of course I did it when I coached as favouriet players in my team were the ones I thought would help my team win. read what Henry and Hansen etc say about Richie McCaw, definitely their favourite player, same as what they say about the Read, Smith etc etc.
Of course a coach picks his favourite players, they the ones he think will make his job easier. -
@dan54 come on bro. Of course Richie McCaw is a favourite player lol. What an odd example
Of course you pick your favourite players. What most of us have an issue with is these favourite players aren't very good.
His favourites aren't winning anything, that is what we're critical of
You seem to be okay with it. Why? Do you want the Canes to win the comp?
Your post above tends to show you align with what we're saying re: selections - and I agree that Love made poor choices at the start of the game
either way, a Love kicking the ball down the middle of the park is better than JGB
