    @crucial

    Did you watch the video?

The cars reverse in automatically. I agree that drive through makes more sense but could be harder to get locations (especially in cramped spaces such as Japan).

Doesn’t look like they reverse in automatically. In he first car you can see the driver spinning the steering wheel.
It does look like the machine aligns the car after though.

Pretty cool gadget though. Obviously manufacturers would have to design their vehicles as some kind of standard.

At 32 second mark, it literally says 'automatic parking for battery swapping has started' so although we can see the wheel spinning her hands may not be on it.

@gt12 while a good idea, I can only imagine the wear and tear, engineered tolerances that would turn that into a massive irritant for me. Squeaks and rattles drive me insane.

That's my my concern too but I'm still a big fan of this model for places like Japan where there is elevator style parking - we could charge at our current place, but at our old place, it would be impossible.

I also imagine that within a few years we'll be using cars like a nespresso machine anyway (a recurring revenue model would boost car companies stock prices immediately). In such a case, I imagine you could just take it back and get a non-squeeky one.

@gt12 If I moved to Amami, I wouldn't have range anxiety anyway.

My wife just got a new job, literally working beside Tokyo station, so my dreams of moving to Okinawa are on hold again.

Either a really good idea or a con? Not released yet, and 100 Kms of range isn't great. However, if I were honest we could probably have this and it would fulfill 95% of our driving needs. We could substitute taxi plus train/plane or rental car for the rest....

Not sure about the idea, but we got a second hand Japan leaf, does the commute from the coast to Whangarei and back. Saved us a bomb, and the environmental benefits. Range is shit, but it's all we need

@gt12 100km would be great for city cars. And far cheaper than a new EV at that price.

    https://www.subaru.com.au/solterra

New Subie SUV. Looks like that is the best candidate for replacing my X-Trail given the price difference between that and the Volvo XC40.

Yes I know one is a luxury vehicle, but I'm hardly a luxury guy 😉

Funnily enough, we’ve been having the ‘is Volvo a real luxury brand’ conversation in our house as the XC60 PHV is more expensive than the BMW X3 PHV (here at least, for demos).

I don’t think they’ve got their pricing quite right as I’m looking for a slight discount on taking on the Volvo sticker in comparison to the Germans.

The XC60 is a little bigger than the X3 I thought?

The Volvo's kind of cross over - the XC40 is midway between the X1 and X3 I think, but the X3 and XC60 are both five seaters and to get 7 you need to go to the XC90 or X5 (no 7 seats in the X5 PHV though).
