Awful refereeing team - get top level officials for a game of such importance. Early goal was the sucker punch as CR never really threatened again. As usual NZ with not quite enough quality when required. Rojas, Sarpreet Singh the 2 who are most missed for quality.

True. But getting a legit goal disallowed hurt us

From the highlights I saw, NZ were absolutely shafted by the ref / VAR there. They should just ditch VAR altogether at this point, it's excruciating to watch. At least when it was just the refs fucking up in real time you could think maybe his vision was obstructed
-
The first VAR incident was incredibly contentious. I have no doubt the referee was fearful of consequences of letting the goal through in a game in which the minnows were clearly rattling the bigger team. The other way, I'm sure it wouldn't have been ruled out. I've got no idea how VAR works or how far they can go back, but surely a 50/50 incident a few passes before the goal is out of the realms of VAR.
I no problem with the red card though - it looked nasty in real time & slow mo. Reid last his head on after that though, which I sort of don't blame as when the game has two var decisions of which both go against you, effectively ruling you out of a game in which you are unexpectedly getting the better of.
-
The problem was that the ref swallowed his whistle for so many other fouls in the 1st half. One example was Garbett getting taken out mid-air. I don't think the Wood incident was a penalty. If Barbarouses gets a red, which was fair enough, then how did the ref ignore a similar foul on an All White a little later (at least a yellow) or Greive getting an elbow to the head?
I am happy to see Hay calling FIFA to task about the quality of the officials. None of these locals should be at the WC.

Yeah, I don't what the VAR rules are for these matches, but taking the "clear and obvious error" criterion as a guide, there's no way our goal should have been scrubbed (and that's especially the case when one looks at some of the other incidents that were let go, particularly grappling in the box). You're absolutely right to point out the refereeing, the fact that the match was not going according to plan for the more fancied team, and the likely outcome had the roles been reversed.
I don't want to sound conspiratorial, but teams like the AWs will never get those calls in their favour, particularly from an inexperienced referee from a country without football "pedigree". In this case, I have no doubt the ref was unduly influenced by the protestation of the more well-known CR players.
Keylor Navas, 3-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid: Ref, I really think you should check VAR for a foul in the lead up to the goal / for a red card.
Mohammad Abdulla, life-long Real Madrid fan and referee from the UAE whose previous biggest match was between two local club sides: Good idea, Keylor - let me go have a look.

Maybe we win, maybe we lose. But the ref and VAR was an absolute disgrace. 100 percent

I am actually ambivalent about us making the WC given how rare it is historically and the drubbings we likely have gotten from the others teams in our pool had we made it. What's galling, is that we actually played really well and did enough (at least) to draw that match in the 90 (and who knows what would have happened after that). WC aside, we dominated and had a great chance to beat a team ranked nearly 100 places above us in the FIFA rankings - it would have potentially been an all-time result for the AWs in and of itself and totally ignoring the WC implications.
However, shit refereeing completely robbed us of that.
-
The reality is that no one outside NZ gives a shît about this, as we are a total minnow in football. It would have been nice to be there but with Spain and Germany in the pool we would have been on a hiding to nothing.

England in the final!
Of womens euros 2022.

@Billy-Tell Shows what a change of coach can do. Sarina Wiegman has 17 wins and two draws since taking over from Phil Neville who had a 54% winning ratio.

Phil Neville was clueless and a terrible appointment given his lack of coaching experience. Wiegman has won the comp before and was a great appointment. Looking forward to the World Cup here next year - plenty of quality in the European teams and add in USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and the South American teams and there is some real depth. And NZ of course ...

@canefan that part I get but not what he has to do with the men's side.
That he's a shit coach and they would be better if they had a proper coach. Maybe they could make a WC final too. Basically a response to Billy Tell's post but you were stuck in the middle
