Movie review thread...

Anybody seen Coraline on dvd yet? I saw it on the big screen, and thought the kaleidescopic 3D was like an LSD trip (the good kind), and curious whether the dvd is also 3D and how well the effect works at home. The cinemas have special digital projectors... how do they do 3D for home viewing? Do you need to view earing the same "REAL-D" eye-glasses you get at the theatre? If the transfer process works, I'd imagine it'd look spectacular on a HD wide-screen.

watched 'I love you man' 7.5/10<br />
<br />
Quite amusing, bit of a 'bromantic' comedy, easy to watch, gotta feel for Lou Ferrigno though, if he had been offered the role as Conan.... -
Anybody doing Distict 9 opening night? I am. Late show. Might have to start a separate thread. I wonder if Saffers will love it or really, really hate it. The production credit says it is a "New Zealand" film. $30-million productionbudget. (Marketing budget must be about the same? Heavy promotion on TV and poster in Toronto/Ontario for the past three months. The young Saffer director Blomkamp is 29; apparently moved to Vancouver when he was 18; that puts him in Jo'burg in 1998, would have been 15 when Boks won RWC). Jackson will make another bucketload in global box-office and dvd. Something tells me I'll probably go see it twice. Can't wait.

Got free tickets to GI Joe the other night. <br />
<br />
Unitentionally hilarious. Loved the mountains at the North Pole and the sinking icebergs. The final reveal is pretty easy to pick. <br />
<br />
That said, the chicks in it are hot and it could be worse. -

Twilight.<br />
Utter shit, but then I'm not a teenage girl. <br />
<br />
But if I was to compare it to my memories of The Lost Boys - it wouldn't come close, no siree.<br />
<br />
Plus there was way too much pale skin going on that I found off putting.
<br />
<br />
I decided to give it a go. It reminded me of an early 90's music video for aerosmith or some other rock ballad outfit. Fucking awful. Can't say there was one enjoyable moment.<br />
Can anyone one tell me why they "had' to play baseball in a storm? why not in the dark or at dusk? Fucking stupid movie
<br />
I assumed my rating (utter shit) would be a warning to others not to repeat my mistake.<br />
<br />
I think they needed to play baseball in the storm for the noise of the ball hitting the bat - that's what I assumed. I can ask my Twilight obsessed cousin what the books says if it's really troubling you. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
<br />
<br />
Not at all. I suppose had I been paying any type of attention to the movie I would have figured that out myself. -

Have heard nothing but good things about this movie. I heard that it was as good a mockumentary as Best in show. Obviously not a comedic movie but it has given a brand new twist to the genre. Im very excited about this one. -
Apple just released an exclusive new trailer for "Lovely Bones" with intro by P. Jackson.<br />

Cool to see Brian Eno scoring the soundtrack.<br />

Looks like he's using digitally manipulated Milford Sound (again) for one of the "heaven" sequences.
<br />
<br />
Obviously looking forward to this movie as most kiwis would be but this does remind of vincent wards "what dreams may come" visually. -

I really don't want to see it - I'm a big fan of the comics as I collected them and the toys as a kid. The previews make the movie seem 'superhero' rather than special forces military.<br />
Although it was never going to live up to my expectations. -

Neil Blomkamp was to direct Halo - but that fell over due for a number of reasons - he was in Wellington for that - as it was to be done under Jackson's executive guidance. Blomkamp developed a lot of D9 here in Wellington - then shot in Jo-burg. I think some editing/post work was done here and then in Vancouver.<br />
<br />
It looks to be an interesting feature - Blomkamp is a visual effects artist originially - before Halo, his only real credit was the break-dancing citroen tvc, and a couple of short films. Do a youtube search - although this one is pretty cool: [url="
<br />
I met him a couple of times here in Wellington - he's a nice enough bloke. Looking forward to seeing D9. It's been a long time in the works. -

The reason for the apparent genre change is the down turn in war toys. The whole G.I. Joe persona had to be rebooted to allow for the nanny state to deem it acceptable for the new century. Even the the actors involved (Channing Tatum mainly) publicly voiced concern over whether it was war movie or a super movie. Everyone wants to distance themselves from US military these days. -
The Stunt Man. Good end of 70's film-making era flick. Excellent performance from Peter O'Toole. 8/10. The director's next film was Color of Night, if you can believe it.<br />
<br />
Been on a bit of an action binge lately. <br />
<br />
Extreme Prejudice. Extremely enjoyable Water Hill 80's action flick. Kind of a modern western. Nick Nolte and Powers Boothe are great value. The whole CIA/special forces sub plot doesn't make much sense (John Millius script), and the end doesn't live up to the excellent first hour. 8/10.<br />
<br />
Driver. Another Walter Hill flick. Not bad, definitely watchable, under-developed story. Good car chases. 7/10. <br />
<br />
Southern Comfort. Yet more Walter Hill ... Louisiana national guard jack-offs get on the wrong side of the local mutants in the bayou. Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine are sympathetic, but the rest of the retards deserve to die. Pretty average. 6.5/10.<br />
<br />
Taken. Bloody good fun. Swarthy scumbags get slaughtered by Liam Neeson in super soldier mode. Neeson is awesome and is a ruthless bastard. Love it when he shoots the innocent woman in the arm. Plot is ridiculous etc. It's basically the greatest Steven Seagal movie you could ever imagine, but with a good actor kicking ass. And his habit of cutting people off mid-sentence by shooting them in the head f*cking rules. 8.5/10.<br />
<br />
Punisher: War Zone. Despite the shitty plot, characters, etc etc etc there is some enjoyable slaughter of bad guys to be had here. 6/10.<br />
<br />
BTW, can someone please cast Charlyne Yi as asian peasant who gets decapitated by a Barrett M107 0.50 cal snipers rifle in the next Rambo film. That is all. -

loved this when it first came out, less so when re-watched recently, much like another film I thought was awesome as a yongster (Silent Rage with Chuck Norris) and then less so when re-watched. -
still worth the watch, especially if the war genre is your thing.
Watched Public Enemies last night. Not as good as I expected, it tended to just drift along a bit too much for my liking...
<br />
<br />
Michael Mann hasn't done much worth watching since Heat, and that was his second attempt at the film (LA Take Down is the original,written and directed by Mann).<br />
Ali had its moments but thats it really. The Tom Cruise/Jamie Foxx thriller which name escapes me was formulaic and only good because of the Cruise/Foxx pairing(both brilliant) and you have no idea how disappointed I was with Miami Vice. -

Collateral. Thought that movie was excellent. -
Two from the weekend.<br />
<br />
Duplicity. Sucked. Thought it was ridiculous, only kept watching to see if they pulled it off. The ending is amusing, but other than that it sucks. Julia Roberts isn't even mildly good to look at any more. 4/10<br />
<br />
Valkyrie. Ok, i love pretty much any WWII movie, and this was pretty cool. Even though you know how it is going to end, its still pretty tense. Not making any attempt at accents of anything really really lets it down, yanks, and several differnent pommy accents all being krauts? Still, i like it. 7/10<br />
<br />

THis is pretty much enough of a review to get me to see this movie. Well done that man, you should be in marketing. -

I am pretty much alone on this one usually. My movie mates loved it too. I just thought the actors where good but it reminded me of a few other movies where the bad is full of advice for his hostage and is ultimately undone by his attachment to the hostage or underestimation. Cruises Best role in years though. Foxx brilliant.
