Sky Television has finalised a rugby rights deal with World Rugby that will also see it sell its loss-making RugbyPass rugby news site to World Rugby.

World Rugby will acquire RugbyPass and Sky will have exclusive rights to premium competitions, including Rugby World Cups, for seven years.

The deal will include every men’s and every women’s Rugby World Cup, the new WXV (international women’s 15s competition) and the HSBC World Rugby Sevens series.

I hadn't seen anything about this before. Looked it up and it looks quite complicated.

Surely Spark Sport can't continue much longer and while I don't necessarily like dominance by Sky, sports are one of those things that only warrant different providers for niche events.
It is so detrimental to the codes themselves to collect an upfront payment at the expense of losing eyes.

I'm pretty sure, if you are a soccer supporter in Aus, you are getting really fucked.

    Optus has the premier league
    Stan has the Champions League
Paramout+ has the A-League and a few other comps
I assume BeIn is still on Kayo and has other European stuff.

    @Daffy-Jaffy

Half the population is female, and women's sport provides "awesome content that people want to watch", says Sky TV chief executive Sophie Moloney.

    Yeah. nah.

It's a little bit like that in NZ. Spark still has the Champions League/Europa League but lost the EPL rights to Sky. Sky has the A-League and the major European domestic leagues. I used to be able to watch CL games and no EPL, but now it is the opposite.

Well, it is a woman’s competition.

Fuck Sky and all it stands for. Have been Sky free for the last year or so and it has been great. Now the fluffybunnies have got their shitty fingers back on the rugby and we'll get the same crappy service in Japan as before. Fuck!

What does this mean? I don't understand the Japan connection?

Sky (NZ) have secured the NZ rights to WR events for 6 years.

@Rapido Oooohhh..., just NZ Sky. I hope that is the case. In Japan, when they had all the rugby contracts, Sky chose certain matches to play and blocked the games they didn't show, as well as spread them across all the sports channels so you had to pay more. Real dicks!
The channel that has the rugby now is expensive but sooooo much better (Wowow).
