Interesting comment from Mrs C on the weekend while watching the Schools Sevens was that she really enjoyed watching the girls more because it pitched various sizes and body shapes againt each other. Watching a little scrapper take on a huge opponent or a big unit having to be brought down really added to the entertainment.
I guess that is a bit like pre-pro Union for the men's game when it was more of a game for all sizes and made me wonder if somehow encouraging that to be more prevalent is possible through using the laws and interpretations.

Couldn't agree more kiwi, you can almost imagine yourself as part of game(in my case about 40 years ago). I find the odd mistake in womens, college, club rugby as almost making whole thing more enjoyable. Watch the game to enjoy how different teams play, rather than just for the score? Not sure I explained that right, but I have watched a few games of grid iron from college level (think it may even be 3rd level) last couple of weekends, and most I have enjoyed the game, because I could understand the mistakes and all?
Also at lower level rugby, you enjoy skills because maybe you don't expect them to have as much as higher level?

London Irish 29 - 20 Saracens - All's well with rugby from my perspective, especially after the vanquished did not even get a losing bonus point this morning!

He seems like a great guy. Came late to rugby (and to the front row) iirc. When did you play with him?

Hugely entertaining game last night as a LI fan. Made a few of the tight losses this season worth it, if that was the pay off.

Nice. Well the bloke certainly did pretty well for himself. Best name in the league too.

He's come a long way from a club level loosehead and part time number 8.

@Bones No but being of vast Irish DNA (62.5% and counting!) and having to have a team to follow in the Premiership it is an obvious choice. Having said that Riki Flutey is part of my precious niece's group of friends from her school days and she reports that his time spent there was very enjoyable and that they really took real care of their players during his time there in the mid 2000s so that's even more reason to have them as my team. Shame about their current financial situation though!

Fucking hell. I've seen people do actual bad shit and get nothing. Then this. People say Marler needs to grow up, maybe Heenan does too if sledging winds him up. Get over yourself rugby.

I get where you are coming from and I would agree completely if players weren't punished for reacting to this sort of shit. But, if you punish players for reacting, you have to 'protect' them in some way and punishing the antagonizer is one way of doing it.

Pretty shitty from mailer, and when your mum's in hospital with cancer, I get it.

Jake Heenan: ‘Hey, brother, you’re better than that, hey?’

Joe Marler: ‘I’m not your brother. I’m clearly not your brother am I.’

Heenan: ‘You’re better than that mate’

Marler: ‘There’s no way I’m from the same mother as you. Your mother is a ****ing whore.

[players were audibly taken aback by comments. Heenan says something to the referee Karl Dickson about what Marler which sounds like ‘He said my mum was a whore to my face’]

Marler [again]: ‘Your mother’s a whore’

At this point the scuffle breaks out with some inaudible exchanges.

Referee Karl Dickson: ‘Who stared that?’

Max Lahiff: ‘Marler called his mother a whore’.

    Players continue to clash.

Heenan: ‘My mum’s in hospital with cancer’

Referee Dickson: ‘Alex just take him back. Take him back. I know there was an allegation of what was said. I actually didn’t hear what was said. If it was really clear on the comms afterwards, it will be dealt with’.

@Crazy-Horse Darcy Swain was unfairly punished for a head nudge. I wholeheartedly agree.

All though I totally agree with you, what Joe said was pretty fucked up... I'm mean if someone called my mum a whore, I would totally punch them as well. Especially if they're in hospital with cancer.

I have never understood why people get so angry at slurs against their mother by people who don't know their mother from a bar of soap.

Dickson's integrity should be questioned here. How could he not have heard it when he's right beside the scrum?

One of my favourite slurs I've ever heard... I went to a soccer match at the Maracana... and a massive section of the crowd were singing/chanting something. I'd gone with a local, and eventually managed to convince him to translate it for me.
They were chanting at one particular player, something like....

Your mother is a whore, and she is ashamed of you

    Fucking brilliant.

I don’t think his integrity is in question but his competence should be. That all sounded like a cop out on decision making to me. The old ‘my hands are tied , I have to penalise you’ bullshit.
Avoiding having to make judgment on the field on something that was pretty obvious.
