@Crucial I'd say that list is considerable evidence for the assertion that success is at the very least correlated with quality five-eighths.

I'd say you could make a list of similar quality if you looked at Super Rugby winning hookers, or tight head props, or openside flankers.

The short answer is no. You can't win a title without an international quality ten, atleast that's what history suggests.

I look back at Hurricanes teams of the past, and David Holwell comes to mind as a guy who could have guided us to a title if he'd been 10 instead of Jimmy Gopperth, when we had one of our best teams. It had quality all over the park, our tight 5 was not the best in the comp but could hold their own

Not so sure. IIRC at a time when teams were thriving with 10s that were runners, Holwell was a deep pocket type.

I’d say YOU could if you wanted to properly make that point.

There could be very good players in all those positions and you’d not win if you have an average 10
See the Hurricanes as discussed above

@canefan 8 I think - and mostly fringe guys - with Reubs, Razor and Gibson (and Toddy, I think) playing positions different to their best.

I think Crucial is largely right - Mehrts is the only one close to great, especially when you take into account the positional switches.

Their 16th man in the match, Paddy O'Brien, had a pretty good test career. 😉
