Carter has really stepped it up defensively this half.
England needed to do more with the ball in the first half though.

The Spanish captain was brilliant. I saw her in Auckland playing Sweden. She's tiny but stronger than she looks and tough as. I wasn't surprised to see her score the winner

I don't know how you fix it. But playing comfortably with the ball at their feet is something the English can't do. They aren't alone

Massive boost for the women's game here and the men's game will be counting their eggs as well.

Problem being it is the end of our season so clubs and associations will now need to capitalise on this using good strategies through summer. The number of evening camps and sessions will likely soar.

(What I need is the Wallabies to do well, so I can capitalise on that in the same manner).

@MajorRage I'm almost certain she had her right foot in the air well before the penalty was kicked - clear from the slomo behind the goal

Moot now though, well played Spain

Spain got revenge for their defeat in the Euros last year. Their midfield press kept Keira Walsh very quiet. Spain kept possession better and looked sharper up front.

Hemp, Bronze and Carter were very good, and Earps with that save was outstanding. Kept them in it.

The core of this English squad are young enough to go again at future tournaments. They can turn this hurt into motivation.

The Spain-England rivalry in women’s football will be one to watch in the coming years.

@NTA gotta have a foot on the line. That’s a very misleading photo tho.

Ball looks as tho it’s just kicked and rear foot clearly only just lifted. Odds on she moved early but as not as clear as it looks there.

Kiwi analyst says she definitely moved, and could have been called back. Added to the drama though and a goal then would have killed the game off as a spectacle

@GibbonRib perhaps. They didn’t show a replay on UK and I wasn’t going to go freeze framing!

As I said, odds on she went early but that still picture doesn’t prove anything.

I must say, supporting England in big tournament so far gives very shit returns. 1 from 5 by my count.

@MajorRage you think 1 from 5 is a bad return? Oh bless your poor innocent soul

Can someone explain this to me please

Football can invent a VAR system which will tell the ref whether a player is offside to within the width of a ball hair, but can't afford enough white paint to paint a penalty spot big enough when once the ball is placed there is a clear ring of white paint outside of the circumference of the match ball

@MiketheSnow why does it need to? The ball just needs to touch the paint, not be surrounded by it

If people want to play silly buggers about whether the ball is in the right spot or not they'll do that regardless of how big the spot is
