Mata Artesian, made in Kawerau (@ $12.99 for 4 from Super Liquor) is a very good pale ale type lager, they also do a Manuka Honey and a Feijoa one.
i tried the Monteiths Cider and wasn't overly impressed with it. But then again, i'm not much of a cider connoisseur<br />
<br />
for those in Wellington, Thorndon New World has an excellent selection of international and boutique beers
<br />
<br />
It does but if you can be bothered making the trek a little further it is beaten hands down by regional wines and spirits (on the mt Vic side of the basin). It has he best range in Wellington and also a selection of good nz beers on tap that you can buy by the flaggon.

oh, given I was comparing Monteiths Cider with the might of White Lightning (bought in 3l plastic bottle in the UK) I thought it was pretty good, ok to have a bottle on a hot summer evening.<br />
<br />
If I planned on having more than a couple, not somethign I'd be keen on.

That Regional shop in Wellington is one of the best liquor stores I've ever been to. <br />
<br />
All of his specials were top stuff, and one of the best ranges of NZ piss I'd ever seen.

tried Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA last night, wasn't a bad drop. Certainly quite tasty, and had a nice balance of alcohol content in it too. Would probably buy a bottle again some time.

Whoever runs the beer department at the THorndon New World must be an absolute fanatic. They must have the biggest selection of NZ boutique beers around. You are spoiled for choice as to what to spend the beer money on that's for sure.<br />
<br />
Tried the Epic 'Mayhem' last night. label reads.."This isn't your ordinary beer de jour. It is so packed with hop-fuelled flavour and aroma that it will invigorate even the hardest hop-head. Brewed as our special festival beer, only available for a limted time. mayhem will alter your beer reality forever. Enjoy this road to hoppyness with caution."<br />
This is a festival release only and is billed as a American-Style Strong Pale Ale. It was very good (as all the Epic stuff is) but personally I prefer the Armegeddon.<br />
<br />
The other purchase was the Hawkes Bay Independent Brewery "Summer Ale'. It was OK and would be refreshing on a hot day, but was a little too sweet for my taste. The proclaimed background notes of ginger must have been way in the background too.

If you're looking for american pale ales/IPAs with a strong (some might say overwhelming) hoppy character then Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas are worth checking out from the more widely distributed brands.

while it sounds as though the Thorndon NW has a superior range, from what Ive seen, most of the NW's all have a decent rang eof the boutique or micro-brewery beers.

tried La Trappe Quadrupel last weekend. Really really tasty beer, but jeez it's strong. Probably due to the fact that it's 10%. Very nice though, and I'd have again some time. I got mine in a glass bottle, but you can also get La Trappe beers in this flask type thing (called a growler apparently)<br />
<br />
A unique Trappist beer that is even put to rest sorted by year in the cellars of the abbey for further fermentation. The strongest beer of La Trappe with a beautiful amber colour. The warm taste is full and well-balanced. A little bit sweet and pleasantly bitter. La Trappe Quadruple is also fermented in oak barrels.<br />

My swiss buddy tells me that is was similar to the beers from his region, but with less of a hop bloom.

at Canerbry's recomendation, I paid a visit to Regional Wine and Spirits on the weekend. <br />
<br />
What a fantastic range of beers. Even more impressive was they had kegs with good beers like Emersons, 3 Boys etc for filling up your flaggons with. I'll be going back there next time i'm down.
