@Kiwiwomble assuming you are looking at night games, there are minimum requirements to be able to air it in HD I believe.

i'm assuming its worth it, that one game minus the extra cost to host
i cant help thinking filling a smaller one every week might generate more buzz and have a greater positive in the long run

There aren't smaller stadiums though. Building boutique smaller venues would be very expensive, and not worth it. Stadiums are money pits. Rugby Park in Invercargill is shot, Yarrow Stadium has been struggling with its upgrade. Plenty of other issues around the country. The scalability of London stadia across the city is a nice example, just very unrealistic for NZ. As mentioned city's like Dunedin, Hamilton and Christchurch want to hold on to All Black opportunities. While other events are also utilised at the venues. NZ would go septic if there was a national stadium in Auckland that go all the big events

Is anyone going to turn up to watch the Hurricanes and Blues thrash the Rebels and Drua this weekend? What are crowd numbers required to turn profits?

I would think Drua fans might come out in good numbers in Auckland. Their first game at Eden Park.

    Wellington teams love losing money.

It’s not unheard of for a team to make the final and yet not manage to break even financially, while last year the Hurricanes made the playoffs, were beaten in the quarterfinals by the Brumbies in Canberra and posted a $1.4m loss.

The Brumbies have been a perennial fixture in the Super Rugby Pacific playoffs, but they haven’t been able to finish in the coveted top two spots to secure more than one home knock-out fixture, and they lost a combined $490,000 in 2022 and 2023.

The average attendance for each NZ team in Super Rugby has been finalised below. I miscalculated the Canes one initially because I factored in too many games.

    Blues: average attendance of 21k
    Hurricanes: average attendance of 16.1k
    Chiefs: average attendance of 14.2k
    Crusaders: average attendance of 12.6k
    Highlanders: average attendance of 12.5k

On that basis, no stadium in NZ needs to have a capacity larger than the Caketin

It also looks visually displeasing to the viewer because having a half empty Cake Tin or Eden Park despite having a moderate crowd looks bad compared to if you had that same crowd filling out a smaller venue like they do in the North.

As mentioned elsewhere, we need one national stadium and all ABs games are there. It is how it is done in most countries, and with our small pop it makes real sense here in NZ. I would say the same thing even if I was living down in the 'rapa rather than Northland. One big stadium in AKL, NZR should make sure they get (part) ownership of it and then it can make money like Twickers or Millenium

Which teams you get to play at home will be a factor in those crowd numbers. The Chiefs didn't host the Blues, which is usually the biggest crowd of the regular season.

@Bovidae they sold out for the clash against the Hurricanes so a few more of those would have boosted the numbers. What's the capacity of FMG?

@Canes4life ~25K with a full Greenzone. Only 6 home games for the Chiefs, three of which were MP, the Force and Drua.

6 games is a stupidly low number for a comp, not much to make money on there

It will be interesting to see what they do next year with 11 teams because that could drop to 5 if they do a singular round robin. Definitely won't please key stakeholders because unless you make the playoffs, you're almost certain to run at a loss.

Would a home and away fixture schedule work or would that not align with the rest of the rugby calendar?

It should be a round and a half or a round and 3/4 competition. Then there is a balance between what is best for the competition and what is best the franchises in terms of gate takings. Local derbies make more money, they are also harder to win. The fairest competition wpuld be two full rounds. Home and away. There is just no appetite for a 26 week competition. The Highlanders this year got two games against the Blues and Hurricanes. The best teams in the comps. We only got to play NZ's worst side the Crusaders once, same with Australia's worst side the Waratahs. A round and a bit is always difficult from a fairness perspective.

    @Tim

going back 5 or so years, when the Blues played at Okara, the costs NRU had to pay to host saw 10k as the break-even figure, however I believe that has changed slightly as the Blues also used to charge a fee to host the games, unsure if this is still the case.

So you'd think at larger venues, the cost would increase considerably?

the short term fix is working out how to only open the stand opposite the camera, i know none of these stadiums were designed to only partially open.....but it just seems obvious, some temp fencing or gates, pack these crowds in, start making it look like a fun place to spend a few hours

    This is happening more.

For the most part the Cake Tin crowd are opposite the main camera.

I've noticed this season Eden Park have closed most of the old eastern terraces which makes the north stand and corner stand look fuller.

    It works well.

Stuff's NZ SR team of the season. Dominated by Hurricanes although the selection of the 6 might be softening the blow when the ABs are named. Also, for those who criticise Stevenson's defence from fullback, Love only has a 69% tackle success rate himself. More detail in the article below.

    The Press

    15 Ruben Love (Hurricanes)
    14 Sevu Reece (Crusaders)
    13 Billy Proctor (Hurricanes)
    12 Bryce Heem (Blues)
    11 Caleb Clarke (Blues)
    10 Damian McKenzie (Chiefs)
    9 TJ Perenara (Hurricanes)
    8 Hoskins Sotutu (Blues)
    7 Peter Lakai (Hurricanes)
    6 Cullen Grace (Crusaders)
    5 Fabian Holland (Highlanders)
    4 Patrick Tuipulotu (Blues)
    3 Tyrel Lomax (Hurricanes)
    2 Asafo Aumua (Hurricanes)
    1 Xavier Numia (Hurricanes)
