@gt12 He's been seriously impressive this year. Literally the opposite of Ah Kuoi or Selby-Rickit who are passengers on the field.

Vaii has been for quite awhile a very good SR player.

Yes he hasn't taken a lot of that form into the international game where I guess most people judge him and write him off, but as an SR player he's always been reliable and efficient for a couple of years now.

Hopefully this year he makes the step up in the international arena.

I think he's played considerably better this year than in the past and stepped up in quite a few areas, taking over Brodie Retallick's excellent work in the loose. Question marks remain about his effectiveness at the breakdown but we'll see!

@Windows97 The thing to remember about Vaai is that he is only 24. His best years as a Lock should still be ahead of him.

Commiserations chiefs fans, despite reaching the final we have looked off the pace throught the season, so who will be leaving Thompson? Stevenson? And who should we target next year. I felt lock and backup props were out biggest weakness and get backup hookers who can throw straight in the lineout, in the outside backs id like to see us sign codemeru Vai from sevens he is ten times the player coomble fabling is

Said this a while back but from what I've heard, Leroy Carter is joining the Chiefs next year.

@Yeetyaah very good tenacious player if Stevenson is leaving I'd move ens permanently to fullback with narawa at 14 Carter could slot in at 11

    Stevenson has been incredibly disappointing.

We’d be better with ENS at 15 I think.

For next year, a better back up 7, some fit locks and a better backup hooker (assuming we lose Thompson).

I think we over achieved this year after some of the injuries we’ve had. Fuck me, we had Tupou at lock (he went well, but he’s hardly good enough for anywhere except MP).

@gt12 I heard something about us signing jahrome brown the brumbies flanker, we have looked good with ens at fullback Stevenson is just not good enough we probably also need to target a big lock

We need to try and bolster the tight 5 somehow, a lot of honest toilers in the front row but aside from Sami T none are really top quality players. Lord appears perpetually injured. Need an out and out 7 as well.

    Halfback or wing?

Stevenson is signed until 2025. He had such on-off season with injuries/concussion that it affected his form.

I would think that Florence is also gone with Brown signed. If Sanerivi is to be the 3rd hooker he needs to get regular playing time at NPC level, presumably for Auckland. He was only the no.3 hooker at Taranaki, and sometimes played at flanker.

The final showed the absence of the likes of Retallick and Cane to provide that hard edge. 2023 was more of a missed opportunity.

@cliff I think that Cody Vai is in the long-term plans but he was focusing on sevens this year.

I think Fiti Sa might step up from the development contract to a full-time deal next season pending how his start to the NPC season goes

Is he injured at the moment? Sa plays for Varsity in the Waikato club competition but I haven't seen his name listed. Maybe he is playing in Taranaki.

Sa is a big unit but still has plenty of developing to do. He has also had a few injuries, hence coming back as one of the Chiefs NDC players this year.

@Bovidae could see Vai return to 15s earlier potentially considering he wasn't included in the Olympics squad or travelling reserves. Possibly an injury though?

@Bovidae I remember having seen Sa in a moon boot a wee while back. Not sure what the injury was or how long but the moon boot was definitely in use.

    @Trig

If Vai wasn't in the frame for the Olympic sevens he could have been selected for the NZ U20s. Maybe he is injured.
