Raeburn Shield
-
To top off last nights loss, Australia are now the new holder of the Raeburn Shield. Good to see a few minnows have a shot at it now.
In order the Aussies play - Japan, Wales, England, Scotland (on their end of year tour)
The AB's could get it back if Wales win, as we play Wales after the Aussies do.Of course if Japan win, well, God knows where it will end up.
-
Japan could well have record consecutive victories holder Cyprus on their schedule.
-
ABs will never get it back if Cyprus take it!
I'm sure we will find a way to gift it to England or someone similar
-
I get a bit emotional when I see people talking about the Raeburn Shield who aren't me
It should spice up the autumn for the Raeburn Shield which I am pleased about eve n if I'm bummed to see the all blacks lose.
-
@davesofthunder I tried to find an existing post to comment on but with no luck. The AB's mightn't get it back for a while depending on EOYT results.
-
Aye, I must admit I would quite like it to end up in the six nations now we have lost it.
Since I live a ten minute walk from Twickenham. England holding it would be useful for being able go take a wander out and spread the word ahead of matches.
It's been years since they held it!

Awful thread title for anyone who happened to open a browser on the fern by mistake, and then watched the game on replay...definitely took the tension out of the match.
-
@snowy yep. i hate spoilers.
-
That's the price of not being a REAL fan of the ABs who would watch it live.
-
@nta at least it gives us a chance to not watch it and pretend it never happened i guess

That sucks dude.
I must say I stay well off this and all social media if I am delaying watching a match. (Helpful comment now of course ๐)

So do I, but opened browser to check weather forecast and the Fern unread items page was last page that had read. With that title as the first line- hard to miss. Just Raeburn shield would have been good.

Fixed
Make it better?

@booboo Thank you, but not really (I'm actually just grumpy because we lost of course).
If @westcoastie sees your repairs it might help someone in future.

I think it is polite though - I sometimes keep up with the comments on a replay, and having a game result in a title is annoying.
-
@nzzp As soon as anyone watching it late saw that there had been Fern traffic on a Raeburn Shield thread, they'd have know we had lost anyway...

yep, but not from a first glance at the thread title.
-
England the new holder...
Did that give it away? Next defense v Samoa.

That's the one from 2018 ๐
You had me worried there for a minute. Don't get much sleep with a four month old in the house so totally could have made that error!

Aaaahhh ... note to self: learn to read
It was the first and last post I saw coz it was at the bottom of the page. Thought it odd ...

Second time holding it for Japan who took it off Wales in 2013.
What could be interesting is that it is possible the Raeburn shield doesn't make it out of the group depending on results.
In every RWC so far it has always made it all the way through and been on the line in the final.
I suspect it will this time as if someone beats japan they are likely going through but it absolutely could wind up not making it.
-
So Japan take it out of pool play. SAF likely to take it this weekend, could possibly now play out that the shield and RWC final has two trophies up for grabs...

It has to from here doesn't it?

Probably right lol, not as poetic as when I first thought about it ..gives himself uppercut lol
-
@Davesofthunder Out of interest has there been any thought into creating a physical shield and then perhaps offering it up for a match? The big unions might not care too much but if it headed to Japan again they might show some interest. Might even be able to crowdfund its creation.
-
If one of the knock matches that has a Raeburn involved, is a draw after 80 mins, does the holder keep it??

Had some discussion with the company Thomas Lyte who make loads of shields/trophies and are the caretakers of the Webb Ellis trophy for example.
Have some costings from them and have looked at running a crowd funding campaign to get it made.
Probably one I will look to set up in he nearish future. Probably need ยฃ10,000 minimum to get started but it was interesting how they structure these things with allowing winners to purchase their own replicas to keep etc which can help fund some other elements.
For the moment the 3d creation I had done is holding place but it would be amazing to get a physical shield and turn up to present it!

It hasn't actually happened in a final yet as both RSA and England held the shield when they went into those matches.
However, extra time means you have a winner of that match so it is no longer and draw and the winning team would take the shield.
In normal matches with no extra time to find a winner the holder keeps the shield in the event if a draw.
-
@Davesofthunder I'd get into a crowdfunding campaign for sure.
any sponsorship opportunities?

Just as a follow up to this.
I decided it would be best to build a decent audience before hitting the crowdfunding scenario as you want to maximise the opportunity and ultimately need an audience who will help drive that for you.
Facebook page is up over 1200 and those kind of numbers give a better springboard from which to grow.
Really need to hit a critical mass to make it successful and that will be through a mixture of platforms.
All sharing and support appreciated

Good news
I'm slightly wary of sponsorship at this stage, I don't even run ads on the website and just fund all the overheads myself.
Want to push a pure concept until I can get the audience up.
That being said, under the right arrangement i would go for sponsorship but at the moment i suspect they would want more than i would be prepared to give (for example, naming rights will never be up for grabs)

Good position to have. A sponsor might conflict with a team/competition sponsor which would just add another set of hurdles to get over
Have you had any luck reaching out to people in the media?

You may find that a kickstarter drives engagement too. Depending on how much you're talking, it could mobilise a bunch of people and raise the profile significnatly
