NBL: Breakers and stuff

In the article I saw on the TV news the Blackwells were really happy with their choice of the new owners as they shared their vision for the team.

I hope they're right. I'll reserve judgement for now

    They’re not the Warriors.....

  • Late here, but the Blackwells seem the sort of owners you'd want for your sports team. Decent, good judgement and happy to sit in the background.

Wonder if they like rugby... could hop over the bridge and take care of the Blues for a bit 😛

Sosa got rattled by Casper. Casper is an NBA quality guard, but just lacks that extra bit of speed at his size that will get him a good look in. He’s the best guard in the NBL IMO.

    I’d offload Sosa too.

    I'd still take Randle

Casper has better 3pt range but Randle’s midrange game is the best in the NBL. Both are good at getting to the basket. I’d have Casper as a slightly better passer. Randle is a chip on his shoulder type player and has that edge that you want from your star player.

  • If you’re keen to watch a good young Kiwi baller turn over to ESPN. Jack Salt from Auckland is playing in the ACC semi for Virginia. Got good game time and played well.

What position does he play? Virginia are tipped for a strong NCAA tourney this year

  • @canefan he’s a good size unit. Plays the 4 and 5.

  • Virginia has just beaten UNC in the ACC final.

Tony Bennett is the coach of UVA, which is the NZ connection. He played/coached in the NBL.

Is he a draft prospect? He's getting minutes for one of the U.S. more fancied college teams this season

  • So much for the no.1 seed Virginia making a run at the NCAA title. I watched a little bit of their game yesterday versus University of Maryland, Baltimore County and they made history for all the wrong reasons. A 74-54 loss means UVA have become the first no.1 seed to lose to a no.16 seed in the NCAA tournament. The stat was 135-0. Jairus Lyles couldn't miss for UMBC. Salt was a non-factor.

Also, there is a story circulating that Paul Henare won't be back for the Breakers.

Virginia were terrible. Got spanked, there was nothing good to say about it. as for Pauli, he's gooone

A bold move by the new owners, who clearly don't believe in seeing what you have for a season first. It says he chose not to renew but i reckon he must have been given the word from the new owners that his head was on the block. Henare did make some questionable coaching decisions, especially the offense and subs. Hang on tight Breakers fans

  • @canefan

Henare has the two biggest jobs in NZ basketball so perhaps it is better that he concentrate on one. Of course, Andrej Lemanis was shit at the start of his career but they showed patience and got the rewards.

Who the Breakers get as a replacement will be key, and perhaps the likes of Vukona and Abercrombie will hold off signing a new contract until that person is announced. It could end up being a HUGE shakeup.

  • This style of meddling American ownership has me worried. Also has me worried regarding the Warriors with a bunch of Yanks wanting to buy that club as well.

I agree. Why not wait a year and see what you have rather than make big changes when you don't understand the landscape?

  • It reminds me a of a documentary on the North Harbour basketball team back in the 1980s Rheineck NZ league. There was a takeover of sorts at board level, a bunch of flash Harrys came in with big ideas about making them into a kiwi basketball juggernaut. They brought in this coach from the US who immediately benched all of their best NZ players, brought in apparently awesome imports who were rubbish, and the whole thing floundered inside a season or two

  • Until we know more details it appears that Henare walked, he wasn't pushed. Maybe his role was going to change with less input into player recruitment, or maybe he wants a new challenge?

Yeah, just reading between the lines. But he was a foundation player, he waited in line and finally got the job. I don't think he would walk away unless they made his position untenable

  • Now UNC are out of the NCAA tourney after getting "Virginia'd" by Texas A&M. No one is safe this year

  • I was going to say MSU were my pick to win but they got upset by Syracuse earlier today, who many thought shouldn't have been in the tourney to start with.

Villanova, Xavier or Kansas will be favoured now. ESPN will continue to cream their pants over Duke.

  • @bovidae I wonder if anyone has an unbusted bracket now? I reckon not

  • @canefan said in NBL: Breakers and stuff:

Me either. Viriginia losing would have busted everybody bar UMBC supporters.

Looking at the bracket Kentucky should get out of the South, and Xavier in the West. The East and Midwest regions look harder to pick.
