Plaque says he was born in Marion, which is true, but only 'cos his hometown of Fairmont was too small to have it's own hospital. It's just down the road. James Dean was born in same hospital and lived in same town. It's very small. There used to be a house refurbished in Fairmont that stood as the small town's museum. Half the house is dedicated to James Dean; the other half is dedicated to Garfield. It's pretty surreal. At least was. I think maybe the town now has a dedicated James Dean museum. I went and visited the farmhouse in the 1980s, where he lived a mile out of town, just made an impromptu uninvited visit, his relatives took me and my friends inside their barn and allowed us to pull a canvas cover off James' racing Porsche so we could take pictures of it. That's about all I know of the Garfield and the creator - that he lived in the same small town as Rebel Without a Cause. And that the state had no helmet laws, so Indianans rode around on their motorcycles in blue jeans and white t-shirts, no helmets, with packs of cigarettes rolled into sleeves at the shoulder, all looking like Fonzie & John Cougar Mellencamp replicants.
