Conor Murray is very good in the Irish system with his excellent box kicks and his cool head. But his passing is slow, very slow and I sure would not want him for a team which plays at a higher tempo than Ireland does.
Has Pocock ever played at six ? I'd rather have him at 7 with Shingler or O'Mahony at 6.
Sean O'Brien did not play a single international game this year so I don't see why he could be in a World XV.
Kepu as reserve tighthead is a joke. There are plenty of better THP than him in the circuit. Itoje is a shadow of his former self this year. I would take Ryan instead or Alun Wyn-Jones.
Kurtley Beale is not a centre but a second five eight. But I reckon there is no standout player in this position. Jonathan Davies was the best last year.
I would go with 14. Delguy (this guy has electric legs) and 15. B. Smith.

Without the balls to pick my own I'll tear yours apart ... 🙂

    Front row probably ok.

I can't comment on Furlong. Thought he was a LH. I know nothing.

    Licks: check.

    Pocock: you're trolling.

    O'Brien: certainly in the conversation.

    Read: check

Murray: one trick pony: good box kick. I'd lean towards Genia. Smith is not up to pre toilet standards yet.

Barrett. Not the greatest 10 I've seen. Fantastic runner. But. Ummm.

    Maybe I'd lean towards Pollard.

    1. Rieko: check

    2. As much as I dislike him Farrell is not far wrong. A fit Dubs is in the conversation.

Beale at 13 is wrong. He's a 12. Liability on D. Don't ask me who I'd pick though. Helpful huh?

    1. Ben Smith is not a bad DC pick but he's 15

    2. SMITH

    And the bench ...

    Kept. No. Just no.

Itoje. Anyone say overrated show pony?

    Wynn-Jones? Two locks?

DMac. As I'm leaving out Barrett for Pollard BB gets super sub spot

Do love a good world 15 thread, although entering one with an opinion is fraught with danger.

Due to various seasons / schedules the only time you can really pick one is at the conclusion of a rugby world cup. SH players always look shattered in the EOYT and vice versa for the summer internationals.

I think most people tend to just pick one that leans heavily on their own team, then a few from others to appear "balanced". As an example, I would put Furlong on, because I've heard he's really good, but never really sat back and watched him play.

Great stuff. That looks pretty good to me.

    Ones I might change are:

    Centre: Jonathan Davies for Farrell
Loosies: Possibly Matera, O'Mahony or Hooper in the mix, but O'Brien and Read hard to beat when fit
Lock: Nakarawa for me over Whitelock (just)

Reserves: not Itoje or Wyn-Jones. Would have players noted above. Maybe Elliot Daly somewhere

Honestly, I know we hate the Irish style of rugby, but when it comes to controlling a game and slowly but surely strangling the life out of an opponent, even if you fall alseep watching, Murray and Sexton are up there with the best.

This sums up what makes selecting a World XV difficult. No use having instinctive fast backs with slow pivots and vice-versa.

Imagine AS racing to follow a breakdown and firing the ball quickly to Sexton. Sexton would be thinking 'FFS man, give me a chance to work out what to do'

BB would be screaming at CM 'Why did you kick it you moron?'

It's a team sport and the team needs to be able to gel as one.

The only sure thing about selecting a World XV is that BBBR would be in it.

Yep, spot on. I suspect Rieko would be as well.

I imagine that all outside of NZ would have Pocock too. I know he's labelled a bit of a one-trick pony here, but you add that to a more balanced back row (big ball carrying 8, stronger tall timber 6) and that is one hell of a back row.

Pocock and Hooper together is a poorly balanced back row regardless of who else is on the pitch.

I'm unsure why are so many people picking are Genia? He's only been good occasionally for a while now and often pretty average, even a slightly out of form Smith is more effective, regardless of the teams they play for.

Actually I'm bemused that Smith is getting some crap on here - he's been pretty good in general, I think people are starting to take for granted the work he does in marshalling the team around the field and making the right play more often than from the ruck.

Fair enough. Was trying to think of a solid utility 23 to cover off back injury options. Daly covers midfield, wing and FB.

Quite a mature response to a world xv thread, everyone on here is getting old .......

I agree that Retallick and Ioane are the two un-challenged best players in their positions in the world.

Everyone else is worthy of argument, depending on styles of play and national bias etc.

There are some seriously good players out there, from other countries, though who do have some serious flaws in the core roles though, who seem to watlz into many paper world XVs. Cough Scud Marx and Butterscrum Furlong.

Marx looks like a seriously good player, but gee that 0-57 with him spraying lineout throws everywhere still puts an asterisk against his claims IMO.

One thing that Marx really highlights for me though is the obsolete role of the specialist 7 turnover specialist, sorry Pocock.

Hooker, IMO, is the second most important role on the field. I can't select a guy for my national team let alone a world XV that you can't rely on for 90 to 95% lineout accuracy.

Not sure why people are picking Folau in their teams, paid $2m+ so we have to pick him?
Rather have BFA at 15 any day of the week
Sure if you want a guy at 15 that can leap up and take a high ball, look spectacular running down the field causing the Ozzie comms to scream ‘FOLAU, ISRAEL FOLAU!!!’ Not create anything and score a meaningless try then he’s your man

    @virgil I reckon a back 3 of :

    15 B Smith
    14 I Folau
    11 R Ioane

Would be fucking deadly. All of Folau's massive upside without being exposed by his equally significant down side.

@derm-mccrum No Rieko in the 23 at all? At the very least I'd suggest Rieko would make the 23 jersey as Barrett and Ben Smith can cover fullback.

I'd suggest that Reiko would make the 11 jersey considering he's the premier wing in the world and as far as I know Ben Smith has never played on the left?

In MY team, I expect players to try things they’ve never done before...

Sexton must be shitting himself worrying about having to run with the ball.

He’s used to that by now.

Don't see the point in Pocock when the rest of the forward pack are great at pilfering as well. He serves no purpose. Much rather have a ball runner or line out option. I'd want a pack that can absolutely destroy the opposition Crusaders style. Who is that Argie no. 8 who was making stupid metres against us?Damn I'm shocking with ethnic names.
