      Ok, was trying to find the thread about diet and some of you eating oats (putting them in the fridge the night before etc and I thought that sounded great.<br />
      <br />
      I purchased some whole grain oats this mornign and put, may be a cup? into a bowl with milk and a banana.<br />
      <br />
      Pretty tasteless things but all good.<br />
      <br />
      Now I feel really bloated and am not enjoying my coffee. This annoys me greatly as since I have given the cigs away, my morning coffee's have become that much more special to me.<br />
      <br />
      How much oats should I be putting into my bowl?<br />
      <br />
      Any Oats recipe suggestions would also be greatly appreciated

        I prefer them hot with steamed soy milk, berries (either blueberries or rasberries) and some honey. I'm assuming you are talking about "oatmeal."<br />
        <br />
        The best thing is to cook them in hot water, then if you have an espresso machine with a milk frother, to steam up some soy milk or low fat milk and pour it in.

          Soy Milk makes me gag thinking about it, so trim milk it will be. Oats are Oats are Oats?? (Wholegrain, that is) Isn't Oatmeal, ground Oats?<br />
          <br />
          These are whole oats which have been rolled (flattened)

            I have em cold like that. Cover about 1 cup in milk the night before and let it all soak in overnight. I always add some cinnamon and then a bit more milk before serving. Dont like having them if they haven't soaked long enough. Just my view though.<br />
            <br />
            Use to always have a coffee about 8am once I got to work but never need one straight after my oats. Ends up being half drunk and left. Prefer to just drink water with it. Coffee comes an hour or so later (ie about now)

              Try soaking them in fruit juice with some chopped dried fruit of your choice added in. A pinch of cinnamon can add a bit of flavour as well.<br />
              <br />
              A whole cup is quite a bit and would take a fair bit of liquid to soak up and soften when using wholegrain oats. The point of crushing oats further is that by destroying the outer they absorb liquid easier and swell up.<br />
              <br />
              I would say you are feeling bloated because in effect you are doing the equivalent of eating dry weetbix until satisfied then adding liquid which they will absorb and swell. <br />
              <br />
              Use a smaller amount and soak longer with a better ratio of oats to liquid. You then have an already 'swollen' breakfast and can judge how much to eat better.

                my breakfast is a cup of wholegrain oats and scoop of protein powder, water to mix, and a chopped up kiwifruit. YUM. Oh, and a coffee with it too - black.

                    Yeah, but your 'diet' can hardly be considered as an example for normal people. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

                      fruit juice - lots of carbs in there - zero protein in this meal unless you add some milk or protein powder though.

                        Oats are the only cereal with Protein and are quite high in it. Around 20% Protein IIRC. Same levels as Soybeans

                          A 1/2 cup of rolled oats (on its own) is approx as follows:<br />
                          <br />
                          Calories – 150<br />
                          Fat – 3g<br />

                          Fibre – 4g<br />
                          Sugar – 1g<br />
                          Protein – 5g

                            1/2 cup of Oats should be around 40g so Protein in that would be around 7-8 grams.<br />
                            <br />
                            Fibre would be much higher in Hooroo's case as he is using Wholegrain Oats with the husk still on.<br />
                            <br />
                            Oats are a super food IMO. I know most of you guys will baulk at the fat/sugar in this but I make up Oat bars similar to those OSM things and as a lasting snack they fill you up no end. The energy release is excellent for sports as you get a mixture of fast and slow release. One of these when skiing/ boarding keeps you going for hours without feeling hungry.<br />
                            <br />
                            1 cup wholegrain oats<br />
                            2 cups rolled oats<br />
                            1 cup flour<br />
                            1 cup coconut<br />
                            1 1/2 cups chopped dried fruit (Sultanas and apricots work well)<br />
                            1 tablespoon cinnamon<br />
                            <br />
                            Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl making sure it is evenly mixed up (or it won't bind)<br />
                            <br />
                            1/2 cup golden syrup<br />
                            200g butter<br />
                            <br />
                            melt together in microwave and stir then add a dash of vanilla essence<br />
                            <br />
                            Mix wet into dry and coat everything. If it seems a little dry a dash of fruit juice or water will help.<br />
                            <br />
                            Throw the whole lot into a baking paper lined baking dish (you will find a good size that suits) or tin so that when flattened down and smoothed out on top it is a good couple of cms thick<br />
                            <br />
                            Bake at 160C for about 20-30 mins. You will tell by looking at it when it is ready. You will also smell when it is ready.<br />
                            <br />
                            Remove from oven and slice up in tin while still hot (I get about 16 pieces). Let it cool.

                                That will happen if they get into the gut before digesting. The softening up more will help with that but the idea is that they digest slowly anyway for slow release of energy.

                                          Smash them out and be proud Hooroo. Maybe try and wait til you're in a lift. My oldest son ( almost three ) ripped out some absolute beauties at his brothers birthday party over the weekend. The kind that would be impressive coming from a grown man. Naturally all the guys laughed and the women folk told him off. Hilarity.
