    Thats kind of my point.

If I can run a 1:43 half at 46, what could I have run it in at 28? My fastest 10k now is 46:59 according to my Garmin app.

Don't get me wrong, I know its a decent time, but I do wonder what I could have done when younger!

But you're faster now over 10km than you were when you were 26?

Looks to me like every 20 years you drop 8 minutes off your 10km time - so when you're 66 you'll be sub-40mins for the 10km - nice work fella 💪

As this seems to be the Marathon thread now (sorry @MajorRage ) I will be doing the Rotorua marathon this week, less than 2 weeks after doing the Christchurch one. A slightly tougher course in Rotorua than Chch (mainly through the middle) and will be interesting to see how my legs hold up towards the back end of the marathon coming off a short turnaround.

To be honest, the real thing is that I now have the time, and the climate, to train. Hong Kong was too hot for 6 months of the year to do decent distance runs outside & with an average working week of circa 60 hours (and no ability for lunch time runs), it wasn't really possible. Combined with a very young family which I was lucky to see for 30 mins a day during the week. Day was generally up at 6 every day, office by 645, home around 630, family time til kids in bed around 730, then have an hour-90 minutes before US open and bed around 10. That hour - 90 minutes I generally spent with my wife or chilling, so I would have had to sacrifice that.

And thats when I didn't have things on in the evening, which was at least twice a week.

    No way Jose.

The more marathon stories I read, the better so don't apologise and keep the information flowing! I bloody love logging on and see that people have posted in this thread. I'm only competitive with myself with running, so despite all the banter, I really do have nothing but admiration for those who smash my efforts.

One day in the future I'll look to do a back to back (i.e next one within month of the last), but at the moment thats a no can do. I'm right in the last stages now of a full year of marathon training, and the body is really starting to creak. Which should be expected with a BMI(spit) of 26 and an age a couple of decades higher.

This was all you needed. Rest was superfluous.

@MajorRage Yeah my aim is to do 100+ marathons. Should I get over the finish line on Saturday that will be number 40, so a long way to go haha, but 1 closer I guess.

Just to throw my lot in here...

I ran the London Marathon last weekend - it was a pretty incredible experience. Never run a marathon before but you can tell London is something special, the crowds are insane (to the point where you almost start to appreciate the quiet moments more).

Started running relatively late last year without any intention of doing a marathon but the chance came up to run London and it felt like too good an opportunity to turn down. Was about 98kg in July and I'm now floating around 90 (the fitness may have increased but the diet unfortunately isn't any better).

Went out with a goal of 3.5 hours but realised about 60% of the way through that wasn't likely to be possible (so much weaving throughout you almost end up running a full extra kilometre due to all the lateral movement). Readjusted my goal and ended up walking for about 500 metres until some jellybabes from a crowd member gave me the impetus needed to run the final 5k (I fast on long run days because my stomach is unreliable at the best of times so I was tanking energy-wise). Finished up just under 3:45 which I was reasonably happy with.

While the run was tough, it's the prolonged training that's tougher - if you can get through that then you can definitely get through the marathon on the day! Good luck to everyone running one in the coming months - it's an awesome achievement.

Awesome mate! We were over there too and wow what an event. Shame I didnt bring the running shoes hah

Since this has become the defacto marathon thread….

I just went back to look at my marathon time after reading the recent posts - and was playing around looking at Strava stats. And I came across this run in my profile from 7 years ago:

    IMG_9148.jpeg

    Pretty impressive effort by me!

Except, there’s one thing - I did not do this fucking run. It just didn’t happen.

I’ve done one standalone marathon in 2015 and then the Ironman one in 2023 - and neither of those were 3:37 efforts believe me!

I’m so confused right now - did I steal someone’s marathon effort???

haha wow so how did this even happen! Its your local area though! Maybe a few too many beers the night before...

OK, I have solved the mystery.

I remembered last night that I lent my watch to a mate from work for a race around then, though I always thought he had done a half. Just did a search for him in the 2017 results, and he finished with a 3:38.54 (he was 32 at the time) - which is an appropriate margin of error I think for this to be the answer!

Despite knowing it in my heart all along, I have to say that I'm now slightly disappointed that it wasn't me...😆

If you ever have a change of heart, there's a good one in the Blue Mountains called the six foot track.

Yeah it looks awesome - you can also do a 50/22/11km version which is probably slightly more realistic

Also - your mate is a fucking lunatic
