The Hurricanes will have a new head coach next season.

John Plumtree is expected to step back from his role as head coach to join Ian Foster's All Blacks management team, leaving the Hurricanes scrambling to piece together alternate plans for next year's Super Rugby season which starts in six weeks.

The Herald understands Hurricanes assistant Jason Holland is the favourite to become the Hurricanes' third head coach in as many years, though it could yet be in a co-coaching capacity with newly-appointed forwards mentor Chris Gibbes.

Negotiations between the Hurricanes and New Zealand Rugby, who pay the salaries of the head coach and one assistant, are on-going but an announcement is expected by Thursday or Friday this week.

    Confirmed: https://www.hurricanes.co.nz/news/article/hurricanes-promote-jason-holland-to-head-coach/

What a disastrous off season for the Canes. Losing Beauden to the Blues, Ardie to injury and now their coach to the All Blacks - this would derail most teams but I still think we have the calibre of players to make the playoffs.

That's the attitude! I think we'll struggle losing our best back (in the most important position with crap behind) and best forward (and by far our best player). Hopefully they'll rise to the adversity

@Machpants I lost count of how many times Ardie played us out of trouble even with Barrett on the field last year. He will be a huge loss. The loss of Proctor in the backs aswell will be hugely felt, he was our rock on defence so it will be up to the likes of Aso / Umaga Jensen / B Proctor to step up there.

I feel if we can keep the likes of Perenara, Coles, Evans etc on the park for the majority of the campaign then there is enough leadership to guide the younger troops.

At least there's now a chance the Canes will play two locks this year.

I hope so. Having a 1.90 lock with poor ball skills certainly doesn't help

Im not too sorry to lose Plum as he loves plodders too much. But the replacement head coach doesn't fill me with much hope. I'm also surprised it wasn't a 1 year appointment with the job advertised to start after super rugby. Holland then would have to really step up to have any hope of a longer term appointment

    So basically Jane replace Plumtree.

@Stargazer Impressive by Blackwell, must have an engine for a bigger fella, does he play 6 as well? Lowe looks like he hardly broke a sweat, must be a fit fucker.

@chimoaus Blackwell won the Surf to Peak in 2015. It's funny. In recent years, it has always been a forward winning the Surf to Peak (Callum Gibbins (2013-2014), James Blackwell (2015), Mark Abbott (2016), Brad Shields (2017) winning it. So, until last year, I thought that maybe Surf to Peak suited locks and loosies better than players in other positions.

Then last year, it was finally a back, Richard Judd. Now, again a back, Lowe.

@Stargazer Interesting for sure, guess I immediately think of 9, 7 and 15 being the fittest in terms of the amount of ground they cover in a game. I just assumed the build of backs would be better suited to speed, however that is more a test of endurance and you would want your locks and loosies at the top.

    Did TJ participate in this?

Also I wonder which prop was the first to the top?

@Machpants TJP did take part in previous years though, despite still being on his ABs break. Dane Coles, too.

Haven't seen photos of today's race, yet.

What sort of experience does CJ have as a coach? no doubt had sublime skills himself, will be interesting to see how he goes. Comes across as a bit of a joker so it will be interesting how hard he goes on the players.
