Got around to watching this doco.
As I was still a kid when this all happened I wasnt as aware of the shit that went down around KIrk & JK, although I knew Daltan was generally central to alot of it and reminded me of yet another reason to dislike him.
Can see how things have changed, when you have the likes of Buck saying he just wanted to play rugby, the politics were none of his business and given the issues we had to sort at home we shouldnt be sticking our nose into other countries business.
Worth a the watch!
A good watch though.

Just watched this on YouTube.
Can't tell you how I found it but well worth a watch.
Made Mrs Boo watch from about halfway and she was right into it (oh yeah him.., used to watch him him with my dad ... etc)
Eye opening about the aftermath of the Cavaliers.
Could have done with some more about that aspect.
But the goodies won!

Thanks for the recommendations, that was as good a documentary as you will see.
It's interesting how there were some toxic personalities in that mid 80s team that I don't think would have the same clout today because the way the All Blacks operate they would not have that type of leeway.
t's interesting how in history guys like David Kirk are often vilified for their principles but are proven to be on the right side of the issue once the dust settles. It's not that the Cavaliers were bad guys just that he did not deserve any ill will for doing what he thought was the right thing to do based on his conscience. He must be one of the more unlikely All Black captains what with not being a big bruising forward and being so soft spoken and bookish and it seems like that is the basis of some of the resentment directed towards him as I think Keith Quinn observed.

My old man saw one of the matches as he was on a male voice choir tour of SA at the time
He and his fellow choristers were on the UN blacklist for singing in SA
Not for singing to white only audiences
Not for singing to black & coloured only audiences
But for having the audacity to sing to mixed race audiences
How dare they
Go figure

Saw that recently.
Didn't realize what pricks half the players were to David Kirk,Well, anyone who refers to himself as better educated than his teammates as he did runs the risk of coming across like a bit of a dick to be fair so I can see why he may not have been too popular to some

Yeah, I thought the same regarding Kirk, he was a bit up his own arse. His stance was right but he was unlikeable within that. Complete contrast to Buck wha was wrong but very likeable within that. The only guy that really came across as both likeable and right was JK. He was actually quite impressive in that doco.

Kirk was very likeable if you were a Blues fan in the 80s.

Agreed. The footage of him sitting at the front of the team bus looking sad after the Bledisloe Cup was lost was incredible. It really conveyed a sense of how lonely it feels to lose as an All Black.

Might have a look at this, as someone who lived through these times etc, I think I saw a lot of things about it back then, but may just refresh my memory. Actually had a brother who went on supporter's tour of Cavaliers with Williment travel.
It's really good. Imo even a non rugby fan would get a lot out of it because it deals with a lot of stuff that is intriguing.
I'm glad it was recommended here because it's come up as a suggested option on YT multiple times but for some reason I always scrolled past it.

Fuck, I'll have to do a re-watch, I can't even remember it now haha

I think it was Norm Hewitts book that first alerted me to what kind of guy JK is. Prior to that I always imagined him to be an arrogant piston wristed gibbon judging by how dominant he was on the field. The truth couldn't be further from that. One of my favourite ever NZ sportsmen, the ONLY negative I can think of is that his glasses look a bit silly.

And a very very limited coach and analyst
Love him as a human, but not as a coach
A bit harsh, I'm sure he's a better coach than most in this world. Just not an elite pro coach, in the top levels of rugby.
