    One of my fave routines, the political peasants from Holy Grail. Saw the film twice on Queen Street when it was released, lined up to see it. Python was huge in NZ in the 70s. When I was a teen I had the cassette tape from this soundtrack and played it endlessly and could recite word-for-word as a sort of poem spoken in a foreign language — because I couldn’t understand any of it. It became something of an education for me. Palin really shines here, but Jones supports beautifully in one of his many awesome woman-roles. The language and rhythm and timing is genius. The film really looks quite beautiful too.

    @JC

    You'd feel blessed to have a mate for life of the calibre of Michael Palin. I have found he and Terry Jones read history at Oxford University, as 19 year olds. The excellent video to which you have linked has Palin, 55 years later, sitting beside his fading friend reading to him, not even sure that Jones knows who he is.

    Michael Palin is, of course, one of the most articulate observers you will hear. He is very thoughtful here.

    I see JC's apt comment "@Snowy just watching that I was thinking - not for the first time - that Michael Palin has to be just about the loveliest bloke on the planet. I’m very sad for him."

    Me too.

    It’ll be interesting to see how the press eulogise him.

    I think since his farewell tour his standing and the view of him has gone up.

    A New Yorker long read on Kobe Bryant from 2014:

    The Fourth Quarter

    The Fourth Quarter

    Kobe Bryant confronts a long—and possibly painful—goodbye.

    @sparky seems they are unsure if his wife and kids were on board. Far out, horrible news.

    So the NY Times say there were 9 on board and not 5 (which was widely reported early).

    He was a great writer but could be kind of a smug dick too . His NZ history books are worth reading, I think that’s where his real talent was.

    I don't know him, personality wise, but his short history books were excellent, and I handed them out around the UK

    He used to do the Batemans encyclopedia of NZ too, he obviously had a real passion for it .
