Coronavirus - Overall

@mariner4life have you seen job losses starting already?

@voodoo yep. couple of bigger operators (well, the ultimate owners) are listed, they have to do drastic things. But most tourism operators work with pretty fine margins, they need to make changes. We haven't got to the layoffs part yet, but there has been a drastic cutback in rosters.
I've seen some poor decision making already. But for a some operators, they won't make it out of the end of this. At some point you can't just "ride it out". The problem is the uncertainty, when are things going to move again? If it worsens in Europe, that is going to grind the world to a halt.
Airlines are moving too, with decreased demand meaning they are just cutting flights, which just again limits the number of seats coming up here (and keeps prices high), that's domestic as well as the expected international.
Our non-tourism arms should protect us, but unfortunately that relies on Chinese manufacturing coming back on line.

One thing that will be interesting coming out of this will be the economic hit and drop in anthropogenic emissions. Should give a good indication what standard of living will look like to "save the world" without enormous investment in R&D into alternatives. Or nuclear...

just booked my entire family for a trip to NZ in April for $1600 return. Last year my wife and son went and it was $1750 for the 2 of them, at the same time of year.
I expect Australians and NZers will be getting very close over the next however long because of the lack of toursim.

I donโt know whether to laugh or cry. This contagion coming from Wuhan in China looks bleak. Massive quarantine, but people have gotten out.
going back to OP on 24 Jan, I think the answer is 'probably'.
