To be fair, I'd be pretty livid myself, if it turned out the airline had overbooked a flight, and because of that - I had to not only wait 2 or 3 days, but also pay the costs.
FFS - Air NZ - if you've overbooked (sure - standard practice, in the past - perhaps time to rethink that) - at least pay for the accom/meals of passengers you boot off.Edit - and no, I didn't read the full article. I'm sure there's something in there to thoroughly invalidate my understandng of the situation, and therefore my pissed-up opinion.

@Kruse shit Air NZ are shooting themselves in the feet repeatedly right now
It's insurance and the Canterbury earthquakes all over again... They can eat small losses here and there, but when something big happens, they are suddenly cutting corners everywhere.

in the current environment, overbooking would seem ridiculous!!
But I know they overbook all the time (having been bumped off a Akl - Wgn flight for being 0 minutes late)

Normal practice but this isn’t normal times and they should be doing better.
Up to 20% overbooking on some routes, because you fuckers don’t show up, then bags get off loaded because of terrorists, that cause delays, that you complain about.
So bloody show up when you book a flight, or cancel it, and the problem goes away.

@Kruse livid? I thought they found it hysterical.
Air NZ, poopoo.
I'll just set the @Snowy timer...
Not on that one. As I said they should do better than that. Have cut too many staff and that is causing a lot of issues apparently.

Yep, agree with all of that.
You'd think it should be pretty obvious that currently... the chance of somebody not bothering to show up is greatly reduced. If I'm booking a flight, it's with plenty of forethought and intention.
Except, maybe, corporate fluffybunnies, just booking shit “just in case”? -
Heaps of people coming back to little ol' NZ shortly
Heaps of more Covid 19 coming, too?
-
@Number-10 as long as they are in isolation, it doesnt really matter does it?

Shouldn't in terms of Covid spread (and they actually get it right).
Who pays, and cost is a different matter. $81m is a lot of cash.
-
@taniwharugby as long as the isolation risks are well managed .
All the guards and hotel staff are returning back to their communities after their work shift so the more people in isolation the more the risk ramps up.
Hopefully we now have rigorous controls in place after the earlier multiple fiascos.
Don't want a Melbourne - obviously.
-
I don't know why you wouldn't minimise the risk and shove them all in an empty barracks somewhere.

Like Te Rapa, hang on, no. Hobby, wait no, they demo'd them too.
Off to Waiouru and run the recruit courses out of Woodbourne!

2 new cases caught in isolation

Air New Zealand is going to "put a temporary hold on new bookings" to align with the Government's managed isolation facilities which are currently housing thousands of people.
Housing Minister Megan Woods, in charge of managed isolation facilities, said she met with Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran to discuss ways to jointly manage the big growth in Kiwis coming home.
"Air New Zealand has agreed to put a temporary hold on new bookings in the short term, as well as looking at aligning daily arrivals with the capacity available at managed isolation facilities," Dr Woods said on Tuesday.
