So I've gone from shop to shop looking for a mask and can find none
I'd like to see the government talk about this and at least attempt to get them out to people. They are proven to help stop the spread, if we want this lockdown to work I think absolutely everyone leaving their houses should be wearing one.

Bunnings or other hardware stores? I'm not wearing masks at the moment, I just plan not to ride public transport or get close to anyone.

The stores I've checked have sold out and they're not doing online orders. I'll make do with a scarf in the meantime but would like to see everyone wearing them.

I wonder about 2 dollar shops? Bit of a crap shoot at the moment, anything used as a barrier will work okay. Maybe not a balaclava...

I haven't seen it in any of the news services yet, but Virgin Australia has shut down their international services based in NZ, not temporarily, permanently. My little brother was a pilot with them, and they were told this morning

my completely uneducated guess is Virgin won't survive this, purely based on their ownership model (and they fact they lease i think all of their fleet)

A very specific type of mask (not what you get at Bunnings) will help prevent the spread but they are a use and throw away type thing - ideally after every time you cough.
the ones you see people wearing in the streets are pretty much a placebo.
I ordered a thousand of them in the second week of January and have issued them to staff but mainly as a morale booster not because they're an effective PPE. Social distancing and isolation will do that for you.

They don't stop the virus for long, about 5 minutes or as soon as your breath makes it damp. Any mask is only to be used to stop large droplet transmission. Even a well used mask will do this and it is valuable. The anti-panic aspect is apparently well documented

What you need to know:
- There are 50 new confirmed and probable cases in NZ - 47 are confirmed and 3 are probable.
- There are now 205 total confirmed and probable cases in New Zealand.
- There is some community transmission in the country.
- There have been over 9000 tests performed.
- Six people remain in hospital in a stable condition, but none have required intensive care. Three have been discharged.
- 22 people across the country have now fully recovered.
- PM Jacinda Ardern is asking people to stay within their "bubble" for the next month.
- Most cases are linked to recent overseas travel, however, there are four being treated as community transmission (three in Auckland, one in Wairarapa)
- Recent overseas travel is still the main driver of new infections in NZ.
- Testing facilities have been set up across the country by DHBs.

So far Virgin have released info in OZ about but they have only confirmed shutdowns of routes and standing down of 8000 staff.
That sucks for your brother and for competition in the Oz-NZ route when things return to normalish in the future.

I just topped up my lotto account so my subscription doesn't lapse and it made me think how extra-ordinary it would be right now to win lotto.
You would have all that money waiting for you and you couldn't do jack with it. You would probably rewrite a hundred times what you will do with it in the course of the lockdown.
You can still spend money. I have a friend in Auckland who is on her own throughout the lockdown - just her and her soppy dog - and I just sent her a dozen bottles of wine. Couriers are still operating so no problems. If you win tonight get yourself sent some booze!

But you won't be able to get it as you have to front up if you win it. But yes, the internet is still our spending friend
