I actually decided now was a shit time for us to buy a new car (even though my job is quite safe)
my little kia rio is 7 years old, and starting to battle. I am loath to put any money in to it as it's worth absolutely nothing
also i need a camping vehicle
And I pictured you as a Holden Barina kind of guy 😉
If you can pick an old Ute (4x4 if possible) they are great for the camping grounds, carrying gear and the odd bush bash with mates riding in the tray!

@Virgil or have had water restrictions for months. I too have a black car. It is thing of beauty when cleaned but at the moment it looks like shit inside and out.
Don’t talk abut the inside, I’ve given up keeping mine clean. When you have young kids it’s like pigs at a trough. Food, clothes, food, empty packets from food, hair ties and food. I always stare forward when I get into my car, I never look in the back seat.
My wife's car is just a big, mobile raisin box. But i get tremendous satisfaction from cleaning it.

What is wrong with you, I can’t stand to be inside my wife’s car ( or dump hole as I call it)

How about a truck? Hilux Invincible X very nice, bit too big for me but depends on what you like. We've had a Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara over the years, love my Ford Kuga but might go a bit smaller for the eco sport next year.
I personally have a thing for grey vehicles. -
@ACT-Crusader pah
I go camping in my Audi S5. I had to sacrifice the gas fridge for a fuck off eski but everything fits (just).
I do have to drive with the seat forward which means I arrive at the campground crippled and then have to put the tent up, but hey its a 4WD camping vehicle that'll do 265 kph - allegedly.

I cast no judgments at all, it’s not what we do on the Fern, but given our bro @mariner4life is currently driving a Kia Rio, I‘m willing to go out on a limb and say that I don’t think he is looking at an S5 for a camping vehicle. I might be jumping to conclusions, but just a hunch.
😉And by the way my RS3 is a very fun car to drive.

European cars cannot handle the tropics. I always wanted an Audi until close friends got them, and i see how much goes wrong with them up here.
If i was going to splash i would buy a Ford Ranger Raptor, but i am not spending $90k on a car.
I was given a $120k Range Rover to drive for a couple of weeks while the Rio got resprayed. That was nice.
And fuck you. The Rio was bought for a specific purpose, which it has carried out very successfully

@mariner4life Interesting. Are the Audi issues with the electronics (humidity?)
A high proportion on NZ's second hand Audi's are imported from Singapore. I have always stayed away from them Mine had one careful owner (who had a speed radar detector fitted...) from new in NZ before me.
I've not been as careful. Hard to fit in all the camping gear without creasing the leather

How expensive are the Hilux’s? I was trying to talk my wife into a raised crew cab Hilux with a TRD Kit (I was so fucking dreaming), but the price was pretty reasonable - about 32K for a 2018 with 2000 Kim’s on the clock (in black metallic too).
expensive as fuck. especially in Australia. New model out, and it's up there in price.
Difference is they hold their value because Australians loooove Toyotas

same in NZ - secondhand Toyotas are great, but can be vastly overpriced

Got a spare 2 Mill?
Teacher at my old school had one. You could pick one up for about 10K in the 80's.

Im looking towards a ford ranger at the moment.
We downsized from the ford territory to a 2019 ford escape last year and the wife loves it but now I feel like we need something a bit bigger in the family so it looks like I will be the one making the change, as much as I like driving my BMW.

my other option. It'll come down to price and specs

Thinking of buying a Subaru Outback. Well to be more precise my wife is, and I really don't have much choice in the matter. But they look like nice cars and from anecdotal evidence they hold up pretty well. Any experience with them here?
Reliable and multipurpose. I think the only thing I've heard bad is servicing costs. Lot of toys, capability, and enough off road for Aussie conditions unless you're going a long distance from tarmac
