UFC

  • @Duluth Hoping Rose comes correct and sees off a very lucky Andrade. I understand you have to put yourself in a position to win and Andrade did that but Rose is a much better fighter.

I expect Aldo to get torched by Yan but hoping he wins and immediately retires.

Max gets his belt back. I love both these guys but I think Holloway will be much better this time.

Usman vs Burns is hard to judge. They are teammates so it makes for a great fight. I'm going to go with Burns, just because.

  • @MiketheSnow I love the concept. Not sure how all the traveling works for all parties involved but I'm hopeful we get an Enter The Dragon/Mortal Kombat themed event.

This fight has been pencilled in for a while. It finally got confirmed today

This is a tough fight for Hooker. A victory gets him the mix with the huge names of the division - Khabib, Gaethje, Ferguson and that Irish guy who probably isn’t retired

  • @Duluth Pourier is an elite striker. This is someone that soundly beat Max Holloway, 2 times. I can’t see Hooker winning but I’ll be cheering all the way.

  • @raznomore said in UFC:

I'm a fan of both fighters too. Volkanovski is the only guy in the division I cheer for ahead of Max.

That first fight was dominant from Volkanovski, Hollway would have to make significant changes. It was slightly closer towards the end but Volkanovski had a broken hand by then..

One thing that might be in Max's favour is the camps. I assume he's doing his normal preparation.

Alexander normally finishes his fight camp in Auckland but he can't do that this time because of covid. He claims it won't matter but it has to be a negative.
Riddell is one of his striking coaches and surely being around Adesanya and Hooker must help sharpen things up

  • Some news about Adesanya's next title defence. He's pencilled in to headline a card in Vegas this September.

That small APEX octagon might help Costa

Riddell talks about the card in this interview:

  • Hooker looked bloody huge at the weigh-ins and came in half an lb lighter than Pourier. I hope we get knees and feints from Hooker this time out. He's not the stand and trade fighter he thinks he is. He needs to be a sniper against Dustin.

    Spot on.

Toe to toe will end badly.

  • Did you see the state on Gian Villante?

  • @MiketheSnow said in UFC:

Did you see the state on Gian Villante?

Jesus just saw that. Fights been cancelled too.

  • Sorry got that wrong saw an older card while recovering from a hangover this morning. Villante fighting Greene as we speak

  • Crazy finish to that fight. Getting his ass handed to him and Greene pulls off the sub from the back.

  • Gall got his ass kicked but I was impressed by how much his striking has improved

  • Any casual NZ based fans - Dan Hookers fight starts in a few minutes on ESPN

  • @Duluth wow! That’s a fight of the year contender in any year let alone this one. Had the 2nd round been 10 seconds longer it would have been a different story. Hooker should have stayed with the leg kick man! He had something that was seriously troubling Pourier but Hooker decided to stand. He ran out of gas.

Dustin post fight breakdown of “flashing out” to a Hooker knee was great stuff. Good to hear some actual technical breakdown from a fighter rather whatever the fuck was going on with Perry’s post fight.

  • @raznomore said in UFC:

    Absolutely

He probably has two fights in the top 5 of the year

  • Amazing fight. Dan needs to work on his fitness and defence but he's shown he can at least hang with the top guys. Stock definitely went up.

  • Great card with some big upsets and turnarounds.

Hooker is tough as fuck fair play.

But ultimately his game plan let him down.

As said above, should have hacked not hooked.

  • @mofitzy_ I think he has problems with his reflexes or depth perception. He seemed to react to the jab just before it hit him. Like he didn't see it until it was hitting him. Now I know some of you are going to say "well isn't that how punches work? It's the ones you don't see that do the damage?" Well yes and no. You can see a punch coming and still get hit. If you miscalculate your opponent's reach and speed you can still see it coming and brace accordingly but still get caught. Dan doesn't do that. He gets hit with multiple punches and it's like he doesn't see any of them coming. He had a substantial reach advantage and only threw a few jabs per round. Pourier is an elite boxer for MMA though. Still, Dan's work was all close-quarters stuff. I'm not saying there's definitely something wrong but it wouldn't surprise me if there was.

  • @raznomore

He does seem to get hit as lot.. On that, I was just checking the stats to see what Poirier's striking %age was.
    http://www.ufcstats.com/fight-details/f8dd1e75978a3957

    Significant Strike %
    Poirier 66%
    Hooker 61%

That seems crazy for a five round fight with two guys that have plenty of KO's

  • I was wondering when people in the US would start talking about this

    It's extremely unlikely.

The fighters could quarantine and train in a hotel if the UFC took over a few floors. That's not too different from normal. I think most of them arrived ~10 days before the last NZ card. They often train in hotel conference rooms etc

The issue is all the support staff that the UFC flies around to every event. That 2 week isolation probably makes it impossible

That's without mentioning the NZ Govt

Still Dana might want to be first again.. the first major US sport with a normal crowd would be a big deal

  • Gilbert Burns out of the Usman fight. He got covid.

Apparently they are trying to get Masvidal to replace him. I suspect they are pushing shit uphill.. not much time left, Usman didn't travel to the island when the fight was cancelled & I think Masvidal will ask for silly money

Masvidal would be stupid not to take the fight assuming he's fight fit.

I assumed he was stupid. Happy to be wrong.

So it’s official now. Masvidal has passed a Covid test and will fly to Abu Dhabi.

This fight is far more interesting than Burns. The stacked card just got better.

    Can't wait

  • @Duluth Jorge has that street Jesus persona and he comes across as a dumbass, scar face wannabe thug. But I don’t think as he’s stupid as he appears.

But we finally end up with the fight people actually want to see. So yusss to that.

Side note, when Paige Vanzant get into fight shape, like she is now, Jesus.H.Christ!

I had thought about this myself. I know some people who potentially could have helped make this happen.

Would Jacinda allow it politically tho? And what happens if there is a mini outbreak just prior ....

  • @MajorRage

Eugene Bareman was talking about it in an interview a couple of days ago. He said they could sell out a stadium (40-60k was the numbers he was talking about)

He admitted there was logistical problems but said if Dana should get in contact with the NZ gov

Still unlikely, but slightly more possible now Bareman is asking for it

  • Not related to the above, but anyone else watched that 30 for 30 Chuck and Tito and the rise of the UFC? Bloody interesting. Especially watching Dana get bigger over the journey...

Tito and Dana really fucking hate each other.

  • @mariner4life said in UFC:

Dana's shots at Tito were funny. It was hard watching Liddell keep fighting

I only became a fan about ten years so I missed all this stuff first time around

    "He's a really dumb guy"

  • @mariner4life Dana's got that Michael Jordan clout. He can say what he likes to whomever he wants. Plus Tito is a dumbshit.

  • Fight Island is paid for and booked! Just in time for Mike Perry to bring the sport of MMA into disrepute...

This man is a dead shit.

How dumb is the old, fat guy to call Perry a motherfucker twice and mimic him?

How dumb is Perry using the 'n' word?

    Gone With The Wind

  • @raznomore said in UFC:

What are your predictions for the main card?

    Usman vs Masvidal
    Volkanovski vs Holloway
    Yan vs Aldo
    Andrade vs Namajunas
    Ribas vs VanZant

Hmmm.. I just realised thats all the favourites. Yan/Aldo was the toughest pick.. I'm fairly confident in Volkanovski

  • @Duluth Hard to disagree.

I think Rose is by far the better fighter but I'm not sure her head is right. She seems like such a reluctant fighter.

Volkansovski vs Holloway is probably the purist fight. 2 guys at the height if their game. If Max comes to fight....its too close to call for me.

I think Usman is an elite champion. He could be there for a long time. He's a bit like Khabib. Not always the most fun fights to watch but he gets shit done and mostly, efficiently. Masvidal is not a chump but let's face it if he gets the win none of us know anything about the fight game. He's not a grappler/wrestler in the classical sense still has subs on his record but Usman is a state champion wrestler. I think it'll be either Usman gets rocked in the first for the upset or it's a snooze fest with usman holding the dominant positions throughout the match to the decision.

Yan is too young and too smart for Aldo.

RIbas gets the easy win but hopefully doesn't do too much damage....

  • @MiketheSnow the old guy just lost his mind and actually attacked Perry. Probably thought he was some whack job emo(look up Perry's latest fashion efforts on Instagram) and thought he could take him.
