While this decision obviously pisses me off as a Canes supporter, it makes perfect sense. 2020 will probably be a difficult year for the Canes and will be the first when he's not with his brother. If it all goes to shit then it's understandable he wants to keep his options open. This will be most important phase of his career and he doesn't want to be stuck at a team going nowhere. Alternatively, if the Canes do well in 2020 then he might stay. I don't think it's a given that he'll go somewhere else.

Im not sure this is worth continuing to debate because the deal is done and dusted but it is stupid to argue that this deal is any worse than someone signing a one year deal (eg. Crotty who liked one year deals to keep himself on top of his game. Not because he was planning to leave)

As has been said, if the Canes weren’t happy with the deal or thought he wasn’t going to play with full commitment or it messed with their medium term plans or whatever other reason they didn’t need to offer him anything. Then he could have just gone elsewhere next season as some are suggesting he should.
But they obviously see the value in having him even if it is for one year. So im not seeing the issue.

@pukunui yep, of course something to bear in mind is he could well be unwanted by the Canes after next year.

I think you are right about it being a big year (or 2) for the canes next year. They have been pretty close the last couple of seasons and have made a couple of good signings. It is shit that BB has decided to bail and that the stupid conference system has to stick around one more year to stuff up another season. Still, they are a good chance to top the conference with the other nz sides losing some key players.

Yeah I'm hoping we'll move on from this by clever confusion techniques...

Her comments came when a request from the Highlanders Super Rugby organisation, to end an agreement with the council, was put to the committee.

Highlanders chief executive Roger Clark met with both the council chief executive Clare Hadley and finance and policy chairperson Darren Ludlow in June to ask for the partnership to end a year early.

In 2016 the council agreed to act as a guarantor for the Highlanders for up to $500,000.

The partnership did not end up costing ratepayers anything.

In return, the Highlanders brought a game each year to Invercargill.

Ludlow said Clark advised them request was financial, given the Highlanders could attract more money elsewhere.

    Where? Queenstown? Wanaka?

Edited because they deleted the tweet and replaced it with another. Apparently, they got the number of years the players are signed for wrong.
