Sadly, unless an absolute miracle happens, you guys are going to be (over the course of the season), likely the worst NZ team.

There are no systems to do anything about that, and even though its not the main reason for their success, the Saders are incredibly hard to knock off their perch when there is nothing to stop them hovering up the best young talent, while keeping much of the best senior talent.

Edit: by the way, I think the halfback signing is a bit different to that. That’s likely the best place for talent distribution given the Lander resources.

@gt12 the past two seasons we've had Lio-Willie, Tavatavanawai & Josh Moorby all in our wider training squad.. failed to lock them in to full contracts!!

@FakatavaAllBlack Tony Brown prefered Dawai or Tikoisolomone 🙃

@FakatavaAllBlack and Jordie, but he left Canterbury when the Canes were on top.

@macmanus Derms was probably who bought down Renton & Hicks from the Mako$ so that's why at the time Lio-Willie didn't get a full contract (I do like hicks)

Yeah I like what I saw in his couple of Landers starts and for Otago.
Power runner and hits hard in D.

That's a pretty sad indictment on the Landers.

    What's your analysis?

Is it that they get close (indicating the identification part is working), but then never get a chance (e.g., the coaches are fucking it up by not using the talent they have and then losing it)?

@gt12 I mean in short.. a guy like Josh Moorby was down south for 2-3 years and not once did he take the field in a landers jersey, yet a battler like Scott Gregory is given chance after chance

I'm pretty sure Moorby got injured playing club rugby for Dunedin last year. He was in the WTG and just got struck down with injuries at the wrong time. He probably would have had an opportunity or two on the wing if it wasn't for that poorly timed injury. Timoci Tavatavanawai, I think at the time he hadn't even played a game for Ta$man and was just seen as too much of a risk. The side then picked 'safe' players due to poor results up front and managed to string some results together I'm the Trans Ta$man comp. I guess that's the difference between the likes of the Crusaders and the Blues. Those squads are packed full of talent, so a risky selection has plenty of protection. They can play their own game without the fear of failure. At the Highlanders, they have Aaron Smith and stuff all else in terms of proper top quality leadership. Because of this there is a reliance of selecting what coaches may consider safe players, like Gregory amongst others. Sadly failing to take the risk has seen quality players taken right out from underneath the noses of the franchise.

I hear there is a bit of interest in Lucas Cashmore by the Crusaders a chance to take Hickeys spot in the squad.
He was with the Crusaders for a few weeks at the start of this season before they went to Queenstown. He made a good impression.

From an NZ rugby standpoint (and not my usual fuck the Saders standpoint), that would be a great place for him.

No Mate I have not heard any Whispers on that as yet.
But I would not be surprised if it is an overseas ex player/coach

@SouthernMann my source was telling me Tony Brown was a sucker for picking “his favourites” and ignoring everyone else unless injury struck.

@mikey07 Shouldn't you have posted this in the Hurricanes thread, substituting the name of the coach of course.

i feel its something we see a bit at all levels in NZ, "experience"...even if someone hasn't done very well...outweighs form or potential a lot of the time, if in doubt pick someone who been there before even if they lost...bit of an indictment we obviously feel the gaps between levels is too big

I think its one of the things that was really good with older versions of super rugby, there was such a range the top of the table games were not a million miles off test match footy when it came to intensity...and the bottom was probably worse than NPC, so you could bring in new tallent and they wouldn't be out of their depth
