The forwards and defense portfolio are arguably the most important at this level. Ryan is world-class, obviously there are no concerns there.

Hansen for defense is interesting, he clearly has a great rugby mind, he's proven himself as an excellent game-planner and attacking strategist for the Crusaders, but he's also showed his value as Japan's defense coach during the 2019 world cup.

Foster got it so terribly wrong in 2019 by retaining McLeod for the defense and then appointing the underqualified Plumtree as his forwards coach, a guy who ironically had forged his reputation at the Hurricanes & Lions as a defensive guru.

With Ryan's introduction I think we have a chance to win it this year, but it's generally the teams with the most effective defensive structures that win these tournaments (Nienaber, Smith, Muggleton, etc..) France have Edwards, Ireland have Farrell, while we have McLeod...

@canefan the list of players that command that kind of respect seems to be dwindling, everyone seems to some question marks

At least Scooter appears to command his own spot in the team now

Now? Unless he's Fozzie's nailed on 6 then he doesn't command his own spot now.

He started every test that he was available for last year. Only come off the bench twice in the last 2 years.

Regardless, do you think he starts ahead of one of Whitelock/Retallick if they're both fit this year?

Not answering the question but -
I think he was ahead of Retallick last year when Retallick first came back from Japan +
I know Scooter is one of your favorite players.

@Tim Having this as an option is going to make life a bit easier. Now that he is in charge he can call the shots afterall.

Thought that was a pretty positive interview posted

Seems like he is really looking ahead and maybe bring a little innovation. We have got really stale and been surpassed by a few countries now.

I'm excited to see what happens going forward. Will be interested to see who gets the super coaching jobs.

@Darren He even briefly touched on tapping NRL talent, shyed away from saying anything about RTS, I think there was a slight insinuation about Katoa at the Dolphins.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/300862330/new-coach-scott-robertson-open-to-allowing-overseas-players-to-represent-all-blacks

Scott Robertson will break fresh ground by inviting all four assistants to the selection table when he replaces incumbent All Blacks coach Ian Foster next year.

Robertson also said he would invite someone with a "peripheral view'' to check the selections, and ensure there were no blind spots.

Wayne smith says "hold my beer"

Surprised all the assistants aren't directly involved in the team selections now.

I hope NZ continues to retain our current policy on overseas players though.

So one of the assistant coaches, has an assistant coach.

Edit: I bet Plumtree and Mooar are kicking themselves at not having assistants now.

Do they need another 50 years of international coaching experience 🫤 , ah nope.
NZR finally started reading the fern last year and got a few tips.
The process is done now. No harm done. Everyone supporting ABs in 2023.
NZR done some good recently after 4 shambolic years

Nope. It is a three-pronged beast. The step down after these guys is too big at the very top.
Scooter is most certainly a squad member but it can't be as a 6. We need him to be the bench/backup lock as well. He can cover 6 in times of injury.
We still need to nail down a starting 6.

a few more questions still to be answered

who will replace Gilbert Enoka as the mental skills coach, will longtime All Blacks manager (since 2004) Darren Shand stay on post 2023?

Why would he need a mental skills coach?

Hasn't Robertson got a unique and outstanding ability to manage & breed mental toughness into his players - especially in knock-out games or finals - which is why he's so successful?

because most teams do? even our SR franchises have them

@Daffy-Jaffy Rassie is a genius. Step gently aside after winning so you’re not directly in the line but still practically running the show, then have a crack at another term 4 years later.

Shit, we have had since post-2017 to find one, and we are still looking.
